He Planned the Engagement… Until His Son Yelled “Mom”

Lucas felt his stomach tighten.

"What the hell is this?"

The nanny didn't even bother standing up. The glow from her phone illuminated her face as she lazily glanced toward him.

"He won't stop," she said with a shrug.

"You're just sitting there..."

Lucas stared in disbelief.

Noah was lying on the floor, his tiny body trembling with exhaustion. His face was bright red from crying. He rocked back and forth violently, repeatedly hitting his forehead against the carpet as though trying to escape his own pain.

And the nanny had simply watched.

Lucas crossed the room in three quick strides and dropped to his knees beside his son.

"Noah."

The little boy didn't respond.

"Noah, look at me."

Nothing.

The rhythmic thumping continued.

Lucas carefully caught Noah's shoulders and pulled him into his arms.

Immediately, Noah began struggling.

"Mama," he sobbed.

The word shattered something inside Lucas.

"Mama..."

Again.

And again.

The same word.

The only word.

The only person Noah wanted.

Lucas swallowed hard.

"Who is she?"

The nanny frowned.

"What?"

"The woman downstairs."

The nanny's eyes darted away.

Lucas noticed.

"Who is she?"

"I don't know."

"Don't lie to me."

The nanny gripped her phone tighter.

"I just started working here six months ago."

"Then who hired her?"

Silence.

Lucas stood slowly.

The room suddenly felt much colder.

"Answer me."

The nanny looked toward the doorway as if searching for an escape.

"Miss Valeria handles all household staff."

Of course she did.

Lucas looked down at Noah, who was now curled tightly against his chest, still whispering the same heartbreaking word.

"Mama..."

A chill crawled down Lucas's spine.

Two years.

Two years of silence.

Two years of doctors, specialists, therapists, evaluations, medications, and endless explanations.

And tonight...

One cleaning woman had spoken exactly zero words to Noah.

Yet somehow, she had become the first person in the world to make him speak.

No.

Not become.

Lucas's pulse quickened.

Recognize.

The realization struck him like a freight train.

The look in the woman's eyes.

The way she had protected Noah without hesitation.

The way Noah had run toward her.

Not toward Lucas.

Not toward Valeria.

Toward her.

As though he had known her his entire life.

Lucas slowly remembered something he had not thought about in years.

The night Noah was born.

The mother.

The woman who had disappeared.

The woman everyone claimed had abandoned her child.

The woman Valeria had insisted was unstable, dangerous, and unfit.

Lucas had never questioned the story.

Not once.

Until now.

Noah suddenly gripped his shirt.

Tiny fingers.

Desperate.

Terrified.

"Mama..."

Lucas closed his eyes.

Downstairs, champagne glasses clinked.

Guests laughed.

An engagement party continued.

But for the first time that evening, Lucas no longer cared about any of it.

Only one question mattered.

May you like

Who was the woman they had just dragged away from his son?

And why did Noah love her like a mother?
