He’s In — Barack Obama Stuns Nation with Announcement 3

Former President Barack Obama is expanding his post-White House media work with a new podcast devoted to books that he says have helped shape his worldview.

Audible and Higher Ground, the media company founded by Barack and Michelle Obama, announced that the six-episode series, “A Great Book with Barack Obama,” will debut exclusively on Audible on Sept. 24.

Each episode will focus on one book and pair Obama with a guest for a conversation about the work’s lasting influence, its ideas and the ways literature can shape how people understand themselves and society.

“Great books have always helped me figure out who I am and what I believe,” Obama said in announcing the project.

“The six books featured in this series have stayed with me throughout my life, and each one has something to teach us about the human experience,” he added.

The six titles selected for the series are James Baldwin’s “The Fire Next Time,” Toni Morrison’s “Song of Solomon,” Cormac McCarthy’s “All the Pretty Horses,” Marilynne Robinson’s “Gilead,” Robert Penn Warren’s “All the King’s Men” and John le Carré’s “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.”

The collection spans fiction, essays, political drama and espionage, while touching on themes including race, identity, faith, power, morality and American life.

Audible said Obama will be joined by six writers, artists and thinkers over the course of the series, although the guest lineup has not yet been announced.

The podcast will examine what the selected books meant to Obama personally while also considering why they continue to resonate with readers and what they can reveal about the present.

The project builds on Obama’s longstanding public interest in literature. Since leaving the White House in 2017, he has regularly released reading lists and recommendations alongside selections of favorite films and music.

The new series gives him more room to explore individual works than those annual and seasonal lists, turning his recommendations into extended conversations about the ideas behind the books.
