The Boy Who Stopped the Dragon

The royal hall of Valerion erupted into chaos as the imprisoned war dragon broke free during King Aldric's engagement feast.
Guards were dragged across the marble floor.
Noblemen screamed and fled for the exits.
The beast roared so loudly that the chandeliers shook above the crowd.
Then suddenly—
the massive doors opened.
A teenage boy stepped inside.
Rain covered his black cloak, and mud stained his worn boots, yet he walked calmly toward the dragon as though he had nothing to fear.
Everyone stared.
The dragon did too.
And that night, for the first time...
the monster stopped fighting.
Silence spread through the hall.
The dragon's crimson eyes locked onto the boy.
Its massive chest rose and fell as smoke drifted from its nostrils.
The terrified guests waited for the beast to strike.
But it never moved.
The boy continued forward.
His face was young, no older than sixteen.
A silver pendant hung around his neck.
It shimmered faintly beneath the torchlight.
King Aldric stepped back from his throne.
Even the royal knights lowered their weapons in confusion.
No one understood what was happening.
The dragon suddenly lowered its head.
Gasps echoed throughout the chamber.
A creature that had slaughtered armies was bowing.
The boy stopped only a few feet away.
He slowly raised one hand.
The dragon closed its eyes.
Then something incredible happened.
Golden symbols appeared across the beast's scales.
Ancient runes.
Forgotten magic.
The pendant around the boy's neck began glowing brighter.
An old woman among the royal advisors suddenly stood up.
Her face turned pale.
"It cannot be," she whispered.
"The Dragon Heir."
The hall erupted with questions.
King Aldric stared at the boy.
"What did you call him?"
The advisor swallowed nervously.
"According to the oldest legends, one bloodline could command dragons without chains."
The boy remained silent.
The dragon gently rested its enormous head beside him.
Like a loyal companion.
Not a monster.
Not a weapon.
A friend.
The king descended from his throne.
"Who are you?" he demanded.
The boy finally looked up.
His blue eyes seemed to glow like moonlight.
"My name is Kael."
The room waited.
"My father was the last Dragon Keeper."
Shock spread through the crowd.
The Dragon Keepers had vanished centuries ago.
Most believed they were myths.
Yet the evidence stood before them.
The runes continued glowing.
The dragon remained peaceful.
Kael turned toward the frightened nobles.
"This creature was never meant to be imprisoned."
No one spoke.
"It became violent because it was tortured."
Several lords lowered their heads.
They knew the king's soldiers had captured the dragon years ago.
Kael placed a hand on the dragon's scales.
The beast released a low rumble.
Not of anger.
Of relief.
Then Kael looked directly at King Aldric.
"A greater danger is coming."
The king frowned.
"What danger?"
Kael's expression hardened.
"The one that forced my people into hiding."
Thunder boomed outside.
Lightning flashed through the stained-glass windows.
For a brief moment, everyone saw fear in the dragon's eyes.
A fear far greater than chains.
Far greater than war.
Kael took a deep breath.
"The Shadow Emperor has awakened."

The hall fell silent once more.
And deep beneath the mountains beyond Valerion, something ancient opened its eyes.
