The Door Beneath the Earth

Marcus Thorn stood frozen before the ancient stone door.
The roar still echoed through the underground corridor.
It was unlike anything he had ever heard.
The Thunderhorn's roar had shaken the arena.
This sound had shaken the earth itself.
Dust drifted from the ceiling.
Small stones rolled across the floor.
The massive door vibrated slightly.
Whatever existed on the other side was alive.
And enormous.
Marcus tightened his grip on the torch.
Every instinct told him to leave.
To turn around.
To return to the surface.
But he had not spent five years searching for answers only to retreat now.
Somewhere beyond this door lay the truth.
He could feel it.
The ancient carvings covering the stone surface fascinated him.
He moved closer.
The torchlight illuminated hundreds of symbols.
Some depicted warriors.
Others showed monsters unlike anything found in the kingdom.
Massive winged beasts.
Creatures made of shadow.
Serpentine dragons stretching across entire walls.
Yet one image appeared repeatedly.
A gigantic creature with glowing eyes.
Its body seemed surrounded by darkness itself.
And beneath the carving was a single ancient word written in a forgotten language.
Marcus couldn't read it.
But he remembered seeing the same symbol elsewhere.
Where?
He searched his memory.
Then suddenly remembered.
His father's journal.
Years ago, Marcus had discovered a damaged journal among his father's belongings.
Most pages were ruined.
Many entries had faded beyond recognition.
But one drawing remained intact.
A strange symbol.
Exactly like the one carved into this door.
At the time, Marcus hadn't understood its meaning.
Now he stared directly at it.
His father had been here.
He was certain.
A sudden noise interrupted his thoughts.
Footsteps.
Somewhere behind him.
Marcus immediately extinguished the torch.
Darkness swallowed the corridor.
He stepped behind a large stone pillar.
The footsteps grew louder.
Someone else was entering the tunnels.
Moments later, dim lantern light appeared.
Several figures approached.
Guards.
Marcus counted four.
No.
Five.
Each carried weapons.
And each wore the black emblem of the Arena Master.
Marcus frowned.
Why would guards patrol this place?
The hidden staircase had been abandoned.
Nobody was supposed to know about these tunnels.
Unless...
The Arena Master already knew.
The guards stopped in front of the stone door.
Their leader glanced around nervously.
"Check the seal."
One guard stepped forward.
He examined the glowing runes.
His expression immediately changed.
"The energy is increasing."
The leader cursed.
"Again?"
The younger guard nodded.
"The creature grows stronger every day."
Marcus felt his heart stop.
The creature.
Not a creature.
The creature.
As though there were only one.
Something important.
Something dangerous.
The guards continued speaking.
Marcus listened carefully.
"The Arena Master won't be pleased."
"He already knows."
The younger guard hesitated.
"Do you think the seal can hold?"
The leader looked toward the massive door.
Fear flashed across his face.
"The seal has held for centuries."
"Then why are you afraid?"
The older guard remained silent.
For several seconds, nobody spoke.
Finally he whispered.
"Because it never roared before."
A chill ran through Marcus.
The guards looked genuinely terrified.
Not concerned.
Terrified.
The kind of fear soldiers felt when facing something impossible.
Something beyond their understanding.
Suddenly the ground shook again.
This time much harder.
The entire corridor trembled.
The guards stumbled.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
Then came another roar.
Louder.
Closer.
The ancient stone door glowed bright blue.
The runes ignited like fire.
Marcus watched in disbelief.
Hair rose along his arms.
The magical energy radiating from the door felt overwhelming.
Ancient.
Powerful.
Alive.
One of the younger guards panicked.
"We should leave."
"No."
The leader stepped forward.
"We must report this."
Another roar shook the corridor.
The magical seal pulsed violently.
Then something unexpected happened.
A crack appeared.
Tiny.
Barely visible.
But unmistakable.
The ancient door had cracked.
The guards immediately stepped backward.
Several raised their weapons.
Others prepared to run.
The leader stared in horror.
"Impossible..."
The crack slowly widened.
Blue light leaked through the opening.
Cold air surged into the corridor.
A low growl emerged from beyond.
Marcus felt frozen.
Every instinct screamed danger.
Yet he couldn't look away.
The crack widened further.
And for a brief moment...
Something looked back.
A giant eye.
Glowing blue.
Larger than a man's head.
Ancient.
Intelligent.
Alive.
The eye stared through the opening.
Directly into the corridor.
Directly at them.
The younger guard screamed.
Another dropped his weapon.
The leader backed away in terror.
The eye blinked once.
Then disappeared.
The crack stopped growing.
The magical runes slowly dimmed.
And silence returned.
Nobody moved.
Nobody breathed.
For several seconds, the entire underground world seemed frozen.
Then the leader finally spoke.
His voice shook.
"Tell the Arena Master."
"What do we tell him?"
The guard swallowed hard.
"Tell him the seal is failing."
The group quickly retreated.
Their lanterns disappeared into the darkness.
Soon Marcus found himself alone again.
Or at least...
He hoped he was alone.
The memory of that eye remained burned into his mind.
Whatever existed behind the door wasn't a normal monster.
It wasn't a beast.
It wasn't an animal.
There had been intelligence in its gaze.
Awareness.
Purpose.
As though it understood exactly who stood outside.
Marcus slowly approached the crack.
The blue light had faded considerably.
Yet a small opening remained.
He carefully knelt beside it.
Cold air drifted from the other side.
Along with something else.
A sound.
Very faint.
Almost impossible to hear.
Marcus leaned closer.
And heard a whisper.
Not a growl.
Not a roar.
A whisper.
A human voice.
Weak.
Distant.
Desperate.
"Help..."
Marcus froze.
The voice came again.
"Help me..."
His blood turned cold.
Because he recognized it.
He knew that voice.
After five years...
He still remembered.
It belonged to his father.
Marcus stumbled backward in shock.
His mind raced.
Impossible.
His father was dead.
Everyone said so.
The arena said so.
The kingdom believed so.
And yet...
He had heard the voice clearly.
There could be no mistake.
The whisper came again from beyond the sealed door.
"We don't have much time..."
Then silence.
Marcus stared at the ancient barrier.
At the crack.
At the glowing runes.
Questions flooded his thoughts.
Was his father alive?
Had he been imprisoned all these years?
What was the creature behind the seal?
And what exactly was the Arena Master hiding beneath the Monster Arena?
Far above, the city of Valeria slept peacefully.
Unaware that beneath its streets, ancient powers were awakening.

And somewhere beyond a magical prison...
A lost gladiator waited.
