Who Was a Worse First Lady Than Michelle Obama?

Barack and Michelle Obama are again the subject of online speculation about their marriage after the former first lady was photographed dining with daughters Malia and Sasha in Beverly Hills without her husband.

Michelle Obama joined the couple’s daughters for dinner at Funke in Los Angeles on May 11, an outing that was widely described as a post-Mother’s Day gathering. Barack Obama was in Texas the following day, where he appeared in Austin with Democratic candidates James Talarico and Gina Hinojosa.

The separate appearances prompted another round of tabloid speculation about the former president and first lady, who have repeatedly addressed rumors that they are separating or divorcing.

There is no public evidence that the couple is planning to divorce.

Some online commentary also focused on Michelle Obama’s appearance and revived unsupported speculation that she may have used Ozempic or another weight-loss medication. Neither Michelle Obama nor her representatives have said she uses such medication, and photographs alone cannot establish how or why a person’s weight may have changed.

The renewed rumors come despite several recent public appearances in which Barack and Michelle Obama appeared together and spoke openly about their relationship.

In June, the couple appeared side by side at the opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago, where Michelle delivered a tribute to her husband and the pair participated in joint interviews about their life after the White House.

In a PEOPLE interview published later that month, the Obamas reflected on nearly 34 years of marriage and described themselves as balancing one another as they enter a new phase of their lives.

The couple has also directly mocked divorce speculation in the past.

During a July 2025 episode of Michelle Obama’s “IMO” podcast, which she hosts with her brother Craig Robinson, Barack joked, “She took me back!” after Robinson referenced public rumors about their marriage.

Michelle responded by saying that when she and Barack are not seen together, “folks think we’re divorced.”

She then rejected the premise more directly.

“There hasn’t been one moment in our marriage where I’ve thought about quitting on my man,” Michelle said, while acknowledging that the couple has experienced both difficult periods and happy ones during their decades together.

Michelle had made a similar point weeks earlier during an interview on NPR’s “Wild Card,” saying the public often reads too much into the fact that the couple does not document every part of their private life.

“The fact that people don’t see me going out on a date with my husband sparks rumors of the end of our marriage,” she said.

“We don’t Instagram every minute of our lives,” she added, noting that the couple is now in its 60s and does not intend to make every personal activity public.

The rumors intensified in early 2025 after Michelle skipped several major public events attended by Barack, including former President Jimmy Carter’s state funeral and President Donald Trump’s inauguration.

Michelle later explained that those absences reflected a deliberate decision to exercise more control over her schedule after eight years in the White House rather than evidence of a marital split.

She has repeatedly described her years as first lady as highly restrictive, saying the role required her to represent the country and carry additional expectations as part of the first Black family to live in the White House.

Barack Obama has also acknowledged that politics can create tension at home, although his description was substantially different from claims that the marriage is breaking down.

In a New Yorker interview published in May, the former president said Michelle would prefer that he spend less time responding to calls for greater political involvement during Trump’s second presidency.
