PART 1: The Champagne Tower / Chapter 1 / 2

PART 2: The Men Behind the Waitress

For a moment, no one moved.

The rooftop terrace seemed to hold its breath. Broken crystal covered the glossy black floor between Vanessa and the waitress. Champagne continued to drip from the edge of the cocktail table, each drop falling into the silence like a warning.

Vanessa forced out a laugh.

It was short, cold, and unconvincing.

“Are you threatening me?”

The waitress did not blink.

“No,” she said. “I’m giving you a chance to stop.”

That answer changed the air.

Behind Vanessa, her husband Martin shifted uneasily. He was a tall man in a black tuxedo, used to protecting his wife from scandal, but even he looked uncertain now. His eyes moved from the shattered champagne tower to the waitress’s calm face.

“Vanessa,” he said in a low voice, “maybe we should—”

She cut him off with a sharp glance.

“No. She embarrassed me in front of my guests.”

The waitress looked around the terrace.

The guests were not laughing anymore. They were watching like witnesses at a trial. Some looked uncomfortable. Some looked curious. A few looked afraid without understanding why.

Then the crowd behind the waitress began to part.

Three tall men in black suits emerged from the shadows near the private entrance.

They did not rush.

They did not speak.

They simply walked forward with silent, controlled purpose and formed a line behind the waitress.

The terrace changed instantly.

Guests stepped back. A woman in a silver gown clutched her champagne glass with both hands. One older businessman whispered something to his wife, then quickly lowered his eyes.

Vanessa’s expression flickered.

For the first time, she looked uncertain.

“What is this?” she asked.

A fourth man stepped forward.

He was taller and broader than the others, muscular beneath his black suit, his expression stern and unreadable. He stood just behind the waitress’s shoulder, not close enough to touch her, but close enough to make his position clear.

He was not there for Vanessa.

He was there for the waitress.

“Stay away from her,” the chief bodyguard said.

Vanessa’s face tightened with disbelief.

Martin looked stunned. “Who are you people?”

The bodyguard ignored him.

His eyes remained on Vanessa.

The waitress finally moved.

Slowly, calmly, she set down the tray she had been holding. Champagne still stained her black uniform. A thin line of liquid slid from her hairline to her cheek, but her hands were steady.

Then she reached beneath the collar of her waitress uniform.

Vanessa watched, frozen.

The waitress drew out a diamond-studded heart-shaped necklace.

The pendant caught the rooftop lights and flashed brightly against the black fabric.

A sound moved through the guests.

Not a gasp exactly.

Recognition.

Fear.

Respect.

Vanessa stared at the necklace, and all the anger began draining from her face.

She knew that necklace.

Everyone in their circle knew it.

It belonged to the anonymous owner of the rooftop, the woman who had bought the building through a private trust, the woman whose name was whispered in elite rooms but rarely spoken aloud.

The chief bodyguard’s voice was low and final.

“She is the mistress of this rooftop.”

The waitress looked at Vanessa with perfect calm.

“And you just attacked your mistress.”
