PART 1: THE FUNERAL SALUTE / Chapter 4 / 4

PART 5: THE FINAL VERDICT FOR THE ARROGANT

Three days after the funeral, an emergency board of directors meeting for Vance Defense was called at their skyscraper headquarters in downtown Washington. Arthur Vance had chosen the largest boardroom on the top floor, commanding a panoramic view of the capital as a statement of his absolute corporate dominance.

The long, solid mahogany conference table was packed with major shareholders, notorious tycoons, and Julian—my younger brother—sporting an expensive designer suit and his trademark arrogant grin.

The boardroom doors swung open.

Instead of waiting for an aide, Arthur stood up himself, crossing his arms and lifting his chin, expecting the VIP guest he had spent weeks courting: a high-ranking government official or senior Pentagon heavyweight to serve as window dressing for his upcoming global defense expansion.

Yet the smile froze instantly on Arthur’s face when the figure stepping into the room was not a tailored politician, but a female Army Colonel in a razor-sharp dress uniform, her chest ablaze with top-tier campaign medals.

Behind me stood Harrison Reed flanked by two heavily armed military police officers.

– Clarissa? – Arthur’s eyes widened in horror and fury as he staggered back a step. – You... how dare you waltz in here causing a scene?! Where is security?! Drag this lunatic out right now!

Not a single security guard budged. They all bowed their heads in deference to the rank and absolute authority of the national security officers standing guard.

Julian leaped out of his chair, slamming his fists on the table. – Have you lost your mind?! This is a family corporate boardroom, not a stage for your psychotic dress-up games! Get out before I call the police!

I didn't even spare Julian a glance. I walked straight to the chairman’s seat at the head of the table, where Arthur stood frozen like stone. Casually, I set the crimson folder down on the polished wood, flicking open the lid of my grandfather's silver lighter—its familiar click echoed through the vast, pin-drop quiet room.

– The police are already here, Father, – I looked up, locking my eyes onto Arthur’s trembling pupils, my voice steady, icy, and sharp as a surgeon's scalpel. – Only, they aren't here to arrest me. They're here to seize all corporate assets, freeze every bank account, and execute federal arrest warrants against you and the board for counterfeit military equipment trafficking, national fraud, and international money laundering.

– You... how dare you?! – Arthur lunged forward, his hand rising to strike me across the face out of sheer habit from my childhood.

Before his wrist could even graze my cheek, Harrison Reed caught his arm in a grip of iron. Reed shoved Arthur heavily back into his luxury leather chair while simultaneously reading out the federal arrest warrants before the stunned, speechless eyes of the entire board.

Julian clutched his head and slumped into his chair, a cup of water spilling across his expensive suit jacket as no one dared reach out to help him.

I stood straight, adjusting the collar of my uniform, gazing out through the massive glass windows toward the clear blue sky stretching beyond the pouring rain.

Ten years ago, I walked out of this house in scorn and rejection, branded a failure unworthy of the Vance name. But returning today, I carried the justice of fallen soldiers, the honor of a great mentor, and the ultimate verdict for those who traded family for bottomless greed.

I was no longer the trembling girl of the past. I am Colonel Clarissa Vance—the guardian of life on the battlefield and the executor of absolute justice in the shining light of truth.
