PART 1: The Glass She Was About to Drink

The ballroom restaurant was glowing with the kind of beauty that made rich people feel untouchable.
Golden chandelier light poured over white tablecloths, crystal glasses, polished silverware, and tall candles flickering between plates of untouched food. Around the room, wealthy guests sat in formal evening clothes, speaking in low voices and pretending their lives were as perfect as the diamonds on their wrists.
At the center table sat Vivian Hartwell.
She was forty-three, elegant, sharp-faced, and impossible to ignore. Her dark brown hair rested perfectly on her shoulders, her black sleeveless evening dress made her look powerful, and her red lipstick gave every word she spoke the weight of a command. Beside her stood her husband, Charles Hartwell, tall and formal in a black tuxedo, watching the room with quiet caution.
Vivian lifted a cut crystal wine glass from the table.
The dark red wine shimmered beneath the chandelier light.
She brought it slowly toward her lips.
That was when a young boy rushed from the side of the room.
“No! Don’t drink it!”
Before anyone could react, the boy grabbed Vivian’s wrist and snatched the glass from her hand. Red wine splashed inside the crystal, nearly spilling over the rim.
The entire room froze.
Vivian stared at the child in disbelief.
He was only about nine years old, pale-skinned, with neatly combed light brown hair and a white polo shirt that looked too simple for such a grand place. Both of his hands trembled around the glass, but he did not let go.
Vivian slowly stood.
Her face hardened.
“How dare you touch me?” she said.
The guests fell silent.
Charles stepped closer, confused and tense. “Vivian…”
But she raised one hand, stopping him without looking away from the boy.
To everyone else, the child looked rude. Poorly behaved. Out of place. A small boy interrupting a woman who believed no one in that room had the right to challenge her.
Vivian’s voice turned colder.
“Give that back right now.”
The boy backed up half a step.
May you like
His eyes were wide with fear, but he held the glass tighter.
“Please,” he whispered. “Look inside.”
