PART 4: THE UNRAVELING TRUTH

"The fire... at the Grand Meridian theater," Julian whispered, his voice trembling as the horrifying realization washed over him. He stared at the jagged, twisted tissue spanning her spine, recognizing the exact pattern of injuries from the incident report he had read years ago. "That night... it wasn't just some stranger trapped in the building. It was you, Elena. All this time, it was you."
Elena turned slowly to face him, her eyes shining with unshed tears, her jaw set with defensive pride. She pulled the satin fabric back over her shoulder, covering the scar as she stepped away from him toward the window overlooking the city lights.
"Yes," Elena said, her voice barely above a whisper, yet sharp with a lifetime of pent-up pain. "It was me, Julian. The woman your company’s negligence almost killed. The woman you mourned for a week before moving on to secure your next multi-million dollar development deal."
Julian flinched as if struck across the face. He took a step toward her, shaking his head frantically. "No, Elena, that's not true! I searched for you for months after the hospital discharged you! When they told me the patient had checked out under an alias and vanished, I thought... I thought you didn't want to be found. I never stopped looking for you!"

"And if you had found me?" Elena challenged bitterly, turning to face him directly, her gaze fierce and unflinching. "If you had seen me back then—burned, broken, unrecognizable—would you have put a ring on my finger? Or would you have looked at me with the same pity and horror you're trying so hard to hide right now?"
Julian looked down at his hands, then back at Elena. The red shirt he wore seemed to pulse with the raw, heavy emotion suffocating the room. He didn't answer immediately, because deep down, the brutal fear of that question had haunted Elena every single day of their relationship.
