PART 3: Emma stared at the silver challenge coin resting in her palm.

Never Leave Anyone.
The words cut deeper than any scar on her back.
Five years ago, six people had sworn that oath before deploying on Operation Nightfall.
According to official military records...
every member of the unit except Emma had died.
Now she knew the records had lied.
Admiral Hale broke the silence.
"Commander Reed... we don't have much time."
Emma looked up.
"What happened?"
"The moment we decrypted Captain Carter's drive..."
he paused,
"...someone started eliminating everyone connected to the investigation."
A chill swept through the beach.
Colonel Harrison Reed frowned.
"Eliminating?"
The Admiral nodded.
"Two federal investigators are already dead."
Gasps erupted around the crowd.
"A military prosecutor disappeared thirty-six hours ago."
"And this morning..."
His jaw tightened.
"...someone attempted to assassinate the lead forensic analyst."
The cheerful atmosphere of the luxury beach was gone.
People quietly stepped away, sensing they had wandered into something far larger than a family argument.
Emma's instincts returned instantly.
"Who else knows I'm here?"
The Admiral didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he looked toward the black SUV.
A young intelligence officer hurried over carrying a secure tablet.
"Sir..."
He handed the device to Hale.
The Admiral glanced at the screen.
His face hardened.
"They found us."
Emma's pulse accelerated.
"Who?"
He turned the tablet toward her.
The display showed a live satellite feed of the beach.
Someone...
was watching them.
Not from a helicopter.
Not from a drone.
From a military reconnaissance satellite.
Emma whispered,
"They still have access to classified surveillance."
"Yes."
"And that means someone inside the system is helping them."
The Admiral immediately addressed the officers around him.
"This beach is now under federal security authority."
"Everyone is to remain where they are."
Several Secret Service agents who had arrived moments earlier began quietly positioning themselves around the crowd.
Vanessa looked terrified.
"What is happening?"
No one answered her.
Emma continued studying the satellite image.
Then she noticed something.
Near the southern parking entrance...
a black SUV identical to the Admiral's had just arrived.
Its windows were completely tinted.
No military markings.
No license plate.
Her breathing slowed.
Training took over.
She counted.
One...
Two...
Three...
Four doors.
Nobody got out.
They were waiting.
Emma looked at Admiral Hale.
"They're not here to observe."
"They're here to finish it."
Before anyone could react—
The driver's door burst open.
Three heavily armed men in civilian clothing rushed onto the sand.
Their rifles already raised.
One shouted at the top of his lungs.
"Commander Reed!"
"Don't let her leave this beach!"
The first gunshot shattered the afternoon silence.
Children screamed.
Champagne glasses exploded across the tables.
Guests dropped to the sand in panic.
Secret Service agents immediately returned fire as Navy officers rushed civilians toward cover.
Emma instinctively tackled Vanessa behind a concrete seawall just as another bullet ripped through the beach umbrella above them.
Sand exploded into the air.
Vanessa stared at her sister in shock.
"You... you just saved me."
Emma didn't answer.
Her eyes were locked on the gunmen.
Then she saw something that made her blood run cold.
One of the attackers wasn't aiming at the Admiral.
He wasn't aiming at Emma.
He was aiming...
at Colonel Harrison Reed.
And just as Emma realized why—
The gunman shouted a name she had never expected to hear again.
"For General Kane! Finish the witness!"
The name hit Emma harder than the gunfire.
General Kane.
For five years, she had never heard that name spoken outside classified hearings. Officially, Victor Kane had been a decorated war hero—a man praised in military academies and honored at national ceremonies.
Now armed men were willing to kill for him in broad daylight.
Colonel Harrison Reed stood frozen.
"What... what did he say?"
Emma's eyes widened.
"Dad, get down!"
A second shot rang out.
The bullet shattered the concrete wall inches from the Colonel's shoulder, spraying fragments across the sand.
Before he could react, Emma sprinted from cover.
Vanessa screamed.
"Emma, no!"
Ignoring the bullets ripping through the air, Emma threw herself into her father, knocking him to the ground just as another round tore through the spot where he had been standing.
The gunman cursed.
"She's protecting him!"
Secret Service agents answered with a volley of gunfire, forcing the attackers behind overturned beach chairs.
Families fled toward the parking lot while Navy officers rushed children behind armored vehicles.
Admiral Hale grabbed a radio.
"Seal every exit! No one leaves this beach!"
A helicopter could already be heard in the distance.
Emma looked at her father.
"Are you hit?"
Colonel Reed shook his head, unable to speak.
For the first time in years, he looked at his daughter—not with disappointment...
but with disbelief.
"You just saved my life."
Emma gave a bitter smile.
"I've been doing that longer than you know."
The words cut deeper than any accusation.
Colonel Reed lowered his head.
His hands trembled.
"I failed you."
Emma didn't answer.
There wasn't time.
A Secret Service agent ran toward them.
"Admiral! We recovered one of the attackers!"
Two officers dragged a wounded gunman across the sand.
Blood soaked his sleeve, but his eyes remained defiant.
Admiral Hale knelt beside him.
"Who sent you?"
The man laughed.
"You'll never reach Washington alive."
Hale's expression hardened.
"Who gave the order?"
The gunman smiled through blood.
"You still don't understand."
He slowly turned toward Emma.
"This was never about Operation Nightfall."
Emma's heartbeat quickened.
"What do you mean?"
The man chuckled.
"Operation Nightfall..."
"...was only the beginning."
Before anyone could stop him, he bit down hard on something hidden between his teeth.
A capsule.
Foam appeared at the corner of his mouth.
Within seconds, his body convulsed violently.
The medic rushed forward.
"No pulse!"
The assassin was dead.
Silence fell once again.
Admiral Hale stared at the lifeless body.
Then one of the intelligence officers shouted from beside the captured SUV.
"Sir!"
"We found something."
Everyone turned.
The officer held up a black duffel bag.
Inside were military-grade weapons...
three fake federal identification badges...
and a thick manila envelope marked with a single handwritten word.
REED
Emma slowly opened it.
Inside was a stack of surveillance photographs.
Pictures of her.
Walking her dog.
Shopping for groceries.
Visiting her mother's grave.
Sitting alone on a park bench.
Some had been taken only three days earlier.
Someone had been watching her...
every single day...
for the last five years.
At the bottom of the envelope lay one final photograph.
Emma picked it up.
The color drained from her face.
It showed a man standing outside the front door of her apartment the previous night.
He was smiling directly at the hidden camera.

On the back of the photograph, written in black ink, were eight chilling words:
"You're already too late. We found Michael first."
