PART 1: THE SILENT FOYER / Chapter 3 / 4

PART 4: THE COLLAPSE OF THE HOUSE OF CARDS

Victoria’s words hung in the air, cold and venomous. She believed she held all the cards—that Richard’s career dependence and her immense generational wealth gave her absolute immunity. But she gravely underestimated the depth of a father's protective fury and the digital trail she had carelessly left behind.

Richard didn't yell anymore. The sudden, terrifying calm that washed over him made Victoria’s expression falter for a fraction of a second. Richard lowered his smartphone, unlocking the screen. During his flight home, while reviewing home network diagnostics after receiving strange notifications from smart-home sensors, he hadn't just found system errors. He had accessed the comprehensive archive of indoor security camera footage that Victoria thought she had disabled.

Footage of Victoria screaming at Maya, locking her in the dark pantry, and forcing her to do grueling physical chores played silently in Richard’s mind—and was currently mirroring to a secure cloud drive shared with family court judges and child protective services.

"Your money?" Richard asked, his voice chillingly level. He walked past Victoria, ignoring her entirely as he dropped to his knees on the marble floor right beside Maya. He gently pulled the mop out of her small hands, tossed the cleaning rags aside, and scooped his niece up into his arms, holding her tightly against his chest. Maya sobbed into his shoulder, wrapping her tiny arms around his neck.

Victoria scoffed, stepping down to the foyer floor. "What do you think you're doing? Put her down! You're making a scene!"

"No, Victoria," Richard said, standing up with Maya cradled safely in his arms. He looked her dead in the eye. "We are leaving."
