THE BOTTLE AT HER MOUTH / Chapter 2 / 9

CHAPTER 3 – THE CHAIR TIPS OVER

Margaret’s patience ended in a single sharp movement.

Emily turned her face away again, and Margaret seized the wheelchair handles with both hands. The chair jerked backward. One wheel caught the edge of the gray rug. Emily gasped and grabbed the armrest, but the sudden motion threw her balance sideways.

The wheelchair tipped.

It struck the carpet with a heavy crash.

Emily fell with it, landing against the rug on her hip and shoulder, conscious but stunned. Her breath left her in a broken sound. The medicine bottle flew from Margaret’s hand, bounced once, and opened across the floor. Small pills scattered like pale beads over the gray carpet.

The legal papers followed.

A folder slid from the table. Documents fanned open beside Emily’s trembling hand. A few pages landed near Margaret’s black heels. Another slid beneath the overturned wheel. None of the text could be read clearly from across the room, but the shape of the trap was unmistakable: signatures, clauses, family seals, documents prepared for a woman who had never agreed to surrender anything.

Rosa covered her mouth.

Margaret stood over Emily, breathing harder now, anger flashing through the control she fought to maintain.

“This is to protect the family,” she said again, as if repeating the phrase could make it clean.

Emily tried to push herself up. Her hand slipped on the carpet. She reached toward the nearest solid thing—Margaret’s shoe—not to attack, not to grab violently, but because her body was searching for something stable while the room spun.

Rosa moved before she could stop herself.

“Mrs. Whitmore,” she said, voice shaking, “you’re hurting her.”

Margaret turned slowly.

The look she gave Rosa was colder than shouting. “You are paid to assist, not judge.”

“I was paid to care for her.”

Emily lifted her head at that. Tears blurred her vision. In all the weeks Rosa had witnessed her humiliation, those were the first words that sounded like a side being chosen.

Margaret took one step toward Rosa.

At that exact moment, from beyond the open bedroom door, came the unmistakable sound of rolling suitcase wheels.

All three women froze.

Emily’s breath caught.

Rosa turned toward the hallway.

Margaret went pale, just for one instant. It was enough.

The suitcase stopped outside the master bedroom door.

Then a man stepped into view.
