CHAPTER 5 – THE CHARGE NURSE

The charge nurse’s name was Angela Moore.
She had silver-streaked hair pulled into a tight bun, calm eyes, and the kind of authority that did not waste energy proving itself. When Nurse Denise brought Hannah, Caleb, and the newborn into a quiet family consultation room, Angela arrived less than a minute later.
She looked first at the baby.
Then at Hannah.
Then at Caleb.
“Tell me what you need,” she said.
Hannah almost cried again at the wording.
Not what happened.
Not why are you upset.
Not where is your husband.
What do you need?
“My son overheard a conversation about a custody transfer,” Hannah said. “I did not consent to anything. I haven’t signed anything. I want my sister here. I don’t want my husband or mother-in-law taking the baby.”
Angela’s expression did not change dramatically. That steadiness helped.
“Did anyone present you with paperwork while you were recovering?”
“No.”
“Did anyone ask about your mental health history in a way that felt coercive?”
Hannah let out a shaky breath. “My mother-in-law did. Before the birth. Several times.”
Angela nodded once and turned to Denise. “Flag mother-baby security. Infant remains with mother unless medical necessity is clearly documented by staff and mother is informed. Notify social work. Confirm wristband match. Locate the sister.”
The words moved like locks clicking into place.
Caleb stood near Hannah’s chair, eyes wide.
Angela turned to him. “You did the right thing.”
He looked down. “I was scared.”
“Being scared and acting anyway is still brave.”
Hannah wanted to hug the woman.
Emma stirred in her arms, tiny face still mostly hidden by the white swaddle. Hannah adjusted the blanket carefully and pressed her lips to the baby’s forehead.
Then the door opened.
Elliot stepped in with Patricia behind him.
His eyes moved from Hannah to the baby to Caleb to the charge nurse. He quickly arranged concern across his face.
“There you are,” he said. “We were worried.”
Hannah did not answer.
Patricia smiled tightly. “Hannah, you shouldn’t wander with the baby in your condition.”
Angela stepped forward. “Mrs. Reed is in a staff-supervised consultation room.”
Patricia looked annoyed for half a second before covering it. “Of course. We’re all just trying to help.”
Caleb backed closer to Hannah.
Elliot saw it.
A flicker of panic crossed his face.
Hannah saw that too.
She looked at her husband and said, quietly but clearly, “What were you going to ask me to sign?”
May you like
The room went still.
Patricia’s smile vanished.
