CHAPTER 6 – THE WIFE IN DIAMONDS

Vanessa had survived her whole life by reading rooms faster than anyone else.
In the ballroom, she had seen admiration. Upstairs, she saw danger.
Alexander was no longer confused. Mrs. Holloway was no longer silent. The girls were no longer hidden. The notebook had made the story concrete, and the bank records connected cruelty to money. That meant charm would not be enough. She needed to become wounded before she became accused.
Her eyes filled beautifully.
“You have no idea how hard I tried,” she said. “You left me alone with two grieving children who hated me from the start.”
Emma whispered, “We didn’t hate you.”
Vanessa ignored her. “I gave up my life to become their mother.”
Sophie clutched Alexander’s sleeve.
Mrs. Holloway’s face hardened, but she remained silent.
Alexander looked at Vanessa’s diamonds. “You bought those with the household account.”
Vanessa lifted her chin. “I represented this family tonight. Appearances matter.”
“My daughters were eating trash.”
“They were not starving.”
The sentence landed like ice.
Alexander stared at her, almost unable to comprehend that she had said it aloud.
Vanessa realized too late that she had abandoned sympathy for defense.
He took one step toward her. “How many meals did you deny them?”
“Don’t be dramatic.”
“How many?”
“I was teaching structure.”
“How many?”
Her jaw tightened. “Enough that they would learn.”
Emma started crying.
Sophie covered her ears.
Alexander stopped immediately and turned back to them, dropping to his knees beside the bed. “No more,” he said softly. “No more shouting. No more hiding. No more hunger.”
Emma looked at him like she wanted to believe but no longer knew how.
That look destroyed him.
He had missed the moment when his daughters stopped trusting rescue.
Behind him, Vanessa spoke again, desperate now. “If you humiliate me tonight, everyone downstairs will know your perfect family is broken.”
Alexander stood. “It is broken.”
She blinked.
He continued, “Not because people will know. Because I let you near my daughters and failed to see what you were doing.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
For the first time, fear replaced performance.
Alexander turned to Mrs. Holloway. “Call Dr. Mercer. I want both girls examined tonight. Quietly. Then call my attorney. Tell him to come to the house now.”
Vanessa’s eyes widened. “Attorney?”
He looked at her one last time.
“You will remove the diamonds,” he said. “Every piece that belongs to this family. Then you will go downstairs and tell my guests why Christmas dinner is over.”
Vanessa shook her head. “I will not.”
May you like
Alexander’s voice was calm.
“Yes,” he said. “You will.”
