THE GIRL BESIDE THE STONE / Chapter 6 / 9

CHAPTER 7 – DANIEL’S KITCHEN

Margaret’s house smelled like lemon bread.

Claire noticed it the moment she stepped inside. The house was small, warm, and painfully full of Daniel. Photos lined the hallway: Daniel missing teeth, Daniel in a graduation cap, Daniel holding a fish with comic disgust, Daniel standing beside Margaret at some holiday dinner in a sweater he clearly hated.

Claire stopped in front of one frame.

In it, Daniel was laughing.

Not smiling for the camera.

Laughing.

Claire pressed her lips together.

Margaret saw. “Take your time.”

The kitchen was exactly as Claire had imagined and nothing like it. Clean but lived-in. A blue kettle on the stove. Music books stacked near the window. A chipped mug that said WORLD’S OKAYEST SON sitting on a shelf.

“That was his favorite,” Margaret said.

Claire smiled. “Of course it was.”

Lily woke as Margaret sliced lemon bread. Her little face scrunched, then she opened dark eyes that seemed too serious for someone only days old.

Margaret froze.

Claire adjusted the baby securely in her arms. “She’s okay. She’s just waking up.”

Margaret nodded, but her face had changed again, softened by awe.

“Would you like to hold her?” Claire asked.

Margaret’s hands trembled. “Are you sure?”

“Yes.”

Claire guided Lily gently into Margaret’s arms, supporting her until the older woman found the right hold. Margaret sat slowly in the rocking chair near the window.

Lily blinked up at her.

Margaret made a sound halfway between a laugh and a sob.

“Hello,” she whispered. “I’m your grandmother.”

The word grandmother filled the kitchen with a life Margaret had not expected to have.

Claire sat across from her, exhausted suddenly beyond measure. For months she had carried Daniel’s secret, Lily’s future, and her own fear alone. Watching Margaret hold the baby did not erase that loneliness, but it loosened its grip.

Margaret looked up. “You are not alone now.”

May you like

Claire began crying silently.

Margaret held Lily carefully and added, “And neither is she.”
