CHAPTER 5 — MAYA REMEMBERS THE RING

Maya could not stand.

Her body felt too heavy, too shocked, too full of returning memories that arrived without order. The yellow soup cooled against her uniform. The marble pressed against her hip and shoulder. Adrian stood between her and Elena like a wall she had once known as home, but the truth was still coming back in fragments, and fragments could cut.

His voice.

A courthouse.

Rain on the windows.

A gold wedding ring.

Elena’s face in a hospital room.

A door locking.

A phone taken away.

A letter she never wrote.

Maya pressed her trembling fingers to her left hand.

There was no ring.

She remembered losing it. No, not losing it. Someone removing it. Elena standing beside the bed while Maya drifted in and out of sleep. A doctor saying she needed rest. Elena touching Maya’s hand and sliding the ring away.

“This will only confuse you,” Elena had said.

Maya gasped.

Adrian heard her and lowered himself slightly, still keeping his body between her and Elena. “Maya?”

She looked at him through tears. “My ring.”

His face changed.

“What?”

“She took my ring.” Maya’s voice shook. “I remember. I was in a bed. I couldn’t move. She said it would confuse me.”

Elena’s face went pale.

Adrian turned toward her slowly.

“Where is it?”

Elena lifted her chin, but the motion lacked power now. “I don’t know what she thinks she remembers.”

“Where is my wife’s ring?”

The word wife filled the living room with the force of a verdict.

A maid standing near the far wall covered her mouth. A young footman looked down, visibly shaken. Until that moment, the staff had suspected only that Maya was someone Elena mistreated. Now they understood she was someone stolen.

Elena’s eyes flicked toward the gold-trimmed cabinet near the mirror.

It was less than a second.

Adrian saw it.

He stepped toward the cabinet.

Elena moved to block him. “You cannot search my home.”

Adrian stopped inches from her. “Your home?”

The calmness of his voice was frightening.

“This villa is owned by the Blackwell estate,” he said. “You live here because my father allowed it and because I honored his arrangements after his death.”

Elena swallowed.

Adrian’s eyes did not leave hers. “That arrangement ends tonight.”

He moved past her.

Elena reached out as if to stop him, then thought better of it. Adrian opened the cabinet drawer. Inside were linen envelopes, silver keys, old letters, and a small velvet box.

Maya stopped breathing.

Adrian opened the box.

A gold wedding ring lay inside.

For a moment, he simply stared at it.

Then his hand closed around the ring with such controlled force that his knuckles whitened.

Maya began to cry silently.

Not because the ring solved everything. It did not restore the lost months. It did not erase the fear, the confusion, the work, the humiliation. But it proved that the memories were not madness. It proved that something sacred had been taken from her and hidden in a drawer like contraband.

Adrian returned to her and knelt carefully on the marble, ignoring the yellow soup near his polished shoes.

“May I?” he asked.

Maya looked at the ring in his palm.

Her breath trembled.

“Yes.”

He took her left hand gently. His own hand shook for the first time. Slowly, he slid the ring back onto her finger.

It fit.

Maya covered her mouth with her free hand as a sob escaped, still restrained, still broken, but no longer silent from fear. Adrian bowed his head over her hand for one second, as if apologizing to every lost day.

Elena stepped back.

Her cool demeanor was gone now. Panic had entered her face fully, widening her eyes, tightening her mouth. The white suit that once made her look untouchable now made her look exposed under the chandelier light.

Adrian rose.

He did not shout. He did not threaten. But the room felt colder when he turned to her.

“You made her your servant,” he said.

Elena whispered, “I protected you.”

“No,” Adrian replied. “You erased her.”

Maya clutched the ring against her palm.

May you like

The truth was no longer a feeling.

It was on her hand.
