Marjorie’s Apology

Chapter 11 - Marjorie’s Apology

Marjorie apologized twice more.

The first time was to Lily.

The second time was to herself, though nobody heard it.

She watched the girl sit on the bench near the front entrance while Paul packed groceries into plain bags with no readable labels. Ethan paid quietly. Frank brought the small sled from his truck. Mabel wrapped Lily’s hands in a spare pair of knitted mittens from her purse because grandmothers often carried solutions they did not announce.

Marjorie stood behind the counter feeling like every fluorescent light had found her worst moment.

She had not become cruel because of one bad day.

That was the lie she wanted.

The truth was smaller and harder: she had been practicing small cruelties for months, calling them rules, efficiency, exhaustion, fairness. Lily had simply been the first person too young to hide the damage.

During a lull, Marjorie walked around from behind the counter.

Lily stiffened.

Marjorie stopped several feet away.

“I’m not going to touch you,” she said. “I just want to say something.”

Lily held the milk carton in her lap.

Marjorie swallowed. “I was wrong. Not just rude. Wrong.”

Lily’s eyes stayed cautious.

Marjorie continued, “I forgot you were a child trying to help a baby. That should have mattered more than the register.”

Ethan watched from nearby but did not interrupt.

Lily looked down at the milk. “My grandma says people get mean when they’re scared.”

Marjorie’s face crumpled.

“Your grandma is wise.”

“She also says being scared is not a hall pass.”

A surprised laugh escaped Ethan.

Marjorie nodded through tears. “She’s wise twice.”

Lily considered that.

Then she said, “You can apologize to Tommy too, but he might spit up.”

Marjorie laughed and cried at the same time.

It was not forgiveness.

But it was the first human thing that had happened between them.
