CHAPTER 5 – THE PATIO

Officer Dana Cole had not been assigned to the party.
She was two blocks away responding to a neighbor’s complaint about blocked driveway access when the emergency call came through: fall from height, possible assault, upscale residence, multiple witnesses. She arrived with emergency responders less than three minutes after Ava hit the patio.
What she found did not feel like an accident.
Accidents have chaos.
This had choreography.
The victim lay on the stone patio near the path, pale dress spread around her, stunned but breathing. Guests were scattered in uneven circles. Some cried. Some filmed until Dana ordered phones down. Two older adults stood too close and too still. A man shouted from the second-floor deck before anyone asked him anything.
“It was an accident!”
Dana looked up.
Tyler Graves gripped the white railing, light blue dress shirt wrinkled, face pale with panic.
People who had seen accidents usually called for help first.
They did not begin with defense.
Dana knelt beside Ava. “Ma’am, I’m Officer Cole. Don’t try to move.”
Ava’s eyes were closed. Her breathing was shallow but present. Emergency responders began medical checks, careful and non-graphic. Dana saw no need to dramatize what was already terrible.
Margaret Graves stepped forward. “She slipped. We saw her fall.”
Dana turned her head slightly. “You saw her slip?”
Margaret hesitated.
Howard answered. “It happened very fast.”
That was not the same answer.
Dana noticed.
Upstairs, Tyler called again, “She leaned back. I tried to stop her.”
Dana looked at his hands.
Not reaching.
Not trembling with failed rescue.
Gripping the railing like a man holding himself in place.
She leaned closer to Ava. “Can you hear me?”
Ava’s eyelids moved.
Good.
Dana kept her voice calm. “Who did this to you?”
Ava did not answer in words.
Her hand twitched first.
Then her arm lifted with agonizing effort.
A trembling finger pointed upward.
Not vaguely.
Not toward the house.
Not toward the deck in general.
Straight at Tyler.
The lawn fell silent.
Dana followed the direction of the finger, then looked back at Ava.
“I understand,” she said.
Tyler’s expression changed instantly.

Excuse-making disappeared.
Horror remained.
