THE SLAP IN THE HALL / Chapter 6 / 9

CHAPTER 7 – THE BABY MOVES

In the middle of the confrontation, the baby moved.

It was small—only a sudden hard flutter low against Lila’s palm—but after the slap, after the fear, after the shouting, the movement made her breath catch sharply. Her other hand flew to her belly. Victor felt her tense instantly and looked down.

“What is it?”

“The baby,” she whispered.

For one horrifying second, Ethan and Cecilia vanished from the room. So did the mansion, the chandelier, the family name, the rage. There was only the child inside her and the sudden wave of panic that comes when a mother cannot tell whether movement means comfort or distress.

Victor’s face changed at once. “We’re done here.”

He turned toward the doors.

Ethan took a step forward, sudden fear overtaking pride. “Lila, wait—”

She flinched.

That movement ruined any last hope he had of controlling the story.

Victor looked back over his shoulder. “If you come near her before my attorneys contact you, you will regret it in ways your family cannot insulate.”

One security man moved to open the double doors. The other remained positioned between the Beaumonts and the exit.

Lila hesitated only once.

She looked at the staircase, at the marble hall, at the spot on the floor where her tears had fallen, at the man she married, at the woman who taught him cruelty, and realized there was nothing left in this house except danger wrapped in chandeliers.

Victor guided her carefully toward the doors.

Cecilia called after them, voice suddenly strained. “If she leaves, she leaves this family.”

Victor paused at the threshold.

Without turning, he answered, “Your son already left the meaning of family when he raised his hand.”

Then he led Lila out into the night.

Cold air hit her face like waking up.

The black car waited at the circular drive, engine running. One guard opened the rear door. Victor helped Lila inside, kneeling briefly before shutting it so he could look directly at her in the dim interior light.

“Listen to me,” he said. “You are not going back tonight. Or tomorrow. Or ever, unless it is to collect what belongs to you under legal protection. Do you understand?”

Lila nodded, tears still falling.

He pressed a hand gently over hers on her belly. “And this child is safe with us now.”

The certainty in his voice nearly broke her all over again.

As the car pulled away, Lila looked back once through the window.

In the open doors of the mansion hall, Ethan stood frozen beneath the chandelier, and Cecilia remained on the staircase, both of them watching power leave with the woman they believed they had diminished.

They had mistaken isolation for ownership.

Now the door was closing on them instead.
