CHAPTER 6 – THE TEST NOBODY KNEW

Nathan had not planned to humiliate Vanessa.
That was the part no one would believe later.
He planned only to reveal the truth after the ceremony, privately, gently, in a way that allowed everyone to save some dignity. He had even written a speech about recovery, gratitude, and second chances.
Then Vanessa spoke.
Everyone can see what you are now.
And Nathan understood that second chances given to cruel people often become permission.
For months, he had tested her without announcing a test existed. He watched whether she helped when no one was present. She didn’t. He listened to how she described him to friends. A burden. A complication. A tragedy. He noticed how she smiled for cameras but pulled away when photographers left.
He also discovered something worse.
The accident investigation had quietly reopened after Miles found inconsistencies in the vehicle report. A steering component had been tampered with. The evidence did not yet prove who arranged it, but it proved one thing:
The crash had not been random.
Nathan told only Miles and his attorney.
Vanessa did not know.
Her cruelty at the wedding did not prove she caused the accident.
But it proved she had built a future around his weakness.
That was enough to stop the vows.
Nathan stood in front of her, cream suit catching the cloudy daylight, dark tie still perfectly centered.
Guests stared.
Vanessa’s fear sharpened. “Why would you do this here?”
Nathan’s voice remained calm.
“Because you chose here.”
She looked around at the silent crowd and understood.
May you like
She had wanted witnesses to his humiliation.
Now they were witnesses to hers.
