CHAPTER 2 – THE DEVOTED WIFE EVERYONE PRAISED

Victoria Beaumont had built her reputation on grace.
At charity luncheons, she spoke about sacrifice. At hospital fundraisers, she described the emotional weight of caring for an elderly parent. In interviews beside Daniel, she lowered her eyes and said, “Family is not a burden when love leads.” Women praised her. Men admired her. Doctors trusted her updates because she sounded tired in exactly the right way.
Daniel believed her most of all.
He was forty-two, dark-haired, serious, and wealthy enough that strangers assumed his life was untouched by ordinary fear. But his mother’s illness had made him helpless. Evelyn had suffered a stroke the year before, followed by months of uneven recovery. Some days she recognized everyone. Some days she forgot why she was in a wheelchair. Daniel wanted to stay home, but the Beaumont hotel group was in crisis after a failed European expansion. Victoria insisted she could manage the house.
“Go,” she had told him. “Your mother needs stability. I’ll take care of her.”
Those words became Daniel’s permission to leave.
At first, Victoria sent videos: Evelyn wrapped in blankets, Evelyn near flowers, Evelyn being spoon-fed soup while Victoria smiled tenderly at the camera. Daniel watched them from London hotel rooms and felt grateful enough to ignore the faint unease in his chest. His mother looked thinner, yes. Quieter. More withdrawn. But doctors had warned him recovery could be unpredictable.
Then Maria began noticing the gaps.
The videos were staged in one corner of the sunroom where the light was flattering. The meals shown on camera were removed afterward. Evelyn’s prescribed therapy sessions were canceled when Daniel was away. Victoria dismissed two caregivers and reduced the staff schedule until Maria was the only person regularly near Evelyn.
When Maria questioned it, Victoria smiled.
“You’re a housekeeper, Maria. Not a doctor.”
The warning was polite.
That made it more dangerous.
Maria had worked for the Beaumont family for twenty-one years. She had known Daniel when he was still a boy hiding in the kitchen for cookies. She had watched Evelyn raise him after his father died. Evelyn was proud, sometimes difficult, always demanding—but she had also paid for Maria’s daughter’s surgery years earlier without ever asking for repayment.
So Maria stayed.
She watched.
She documented what she could.
The first video showed Victoria refusing Evelyn’s medication because “confusion makes you easier.” The second showed a meal tray placed out of reach. The third recorded Victoria telling a nurse that Evelyn was asleep while the old woman whispered for water behind a closed door.
But none of those moments were as clear as today.

Today, under the perfect garden sky, Victoria sprayed an elderly sick woman with a cold hose while wearing diamonds.
And the camera caught every second.
