CHAPTER 4 – THE EYE

Nora did not scream when she saw the eye.
That surprised her later.
The eye blinked once in the darkness behind the broken corner. Wet with tears. Wide with terror. Human. Alive.
It was June’s eye.
Nora knew it instantly.
Some bonds do not require a full face.
Her body moved before thought returned. She spun toward the mourners. “She’s alive!”
Chaos erupted.
A woman fainted in the second row. Someone cursed. Several people stood too fast, knocking against pews. The pastor stumbled backward, one hand over his chest. Caleb lunged toward Nora, but three mourners saw him move and blocked him without even fully understanding why.
“Open it!” Nora shouted. “Open the coffin!”
Caleb yelled, “She’s hysterical!”
Nora pointed at the broken gap. “Look!”
No one wanted to.
That was the awful truth. People fear miracles when they arrive wrapped in horror. A dead woman being alive meant everyone in the chapel had participated, however unknowingly, in nearly burying someone breathing.
A young man from the back row finally ran forward and looked.
His face drained.
“Oh my God,” he whispered. “There’s someone inside.”
The chapel transformed.
Mourners became witnesses. Shock became action. Someone called emergency services. Someone else shouted for tools. A florist grabbed the heavy metal stand from a white arrangement and handed it to Nora. The coffin lid did not fully open at first; the locks and hinge system resisted. Caleb had paid for quality.
Of course he had.
Nora stayed at June’s corner. “I’m here,” she said, voice breaking. “June, I’m here.”
From inside came a faint sound.
Not words.
But enough.
Enough to keep the room alive.
Caleb backed toward the aisle. His face was pale now, not with grief but calculation. He looked toward the side exit.
Nora saw.
Even in panic, she saw.
“Stop him!” she shouted.
This time, people listened.
Two men blocked Caleb’s path. He raised his hands, offended and trembling. “This is insane. You’re making a terrible mistake.”
The pastor stared at him. “Caleb… why is your wife alive in that coffin?”
There are questions no elegant man can answer elegantly.
May you like
Caleb said nothing.
That silence convicted him before police ever arrived.
