Chapter 8 - THE MAN CALLED VALE

Victor Sterling could speak only in fragments, but fear gave him more words than anyone expected.

They moved him to St. Catherine's under police guard. Theo was examined in the next room and found unharmed except for exhaustion. Celeste required stitches above her eyebrow. Julian refused treatment for the cut on his hand until Eleanor threatened to ask a nurse to restrain him.

It was the closest anyone came to humor all day.

At noon, the family gathered in Victor's private hospital room.

Detective Ortiz stood near the door.

Priya joined by video call.

Maria, under police protection, sat in a separate interview room downstairs.

Celeste looked older than she had twelve hours earlier.

Without makeup and expensive armor, she resembled Julian more strongly.

Victor lay between them.

Julian leaned close.

"Dad. Who is Vale?"

Victor's mouth worked.

"Partner."

Celeste closed her eyes.

She already knew more.

Julian turned to her.

"Tell me."

Celeste stared at her hands.

"His name is Roman Vale. He and Dad built the first Sterling properties together before either of us were born."

Julian frowned. "I've never heard of him."

"That was intentional."

Victor made a weak sound.

"Thief."

Celeste looked at him. "That's what you always said."

Then to Julian: "Roman handled financing. Dad handled development. In the early years, some of the deals were... aggressive."

Priya's voice came through the tablet. "Aggressive how?"

Celeste gave a bitter laugh. "The kind of aggressive that becomes criminal if the wrong investigator gets curious."

Julian stared at his father.

Victor looked away.

"Roman moved money through shell companies. Dad discovered it and forced him out. Roman claimed Dad had participated and was sacrificing him to save the Sterling name."

"Was he?"

Celeste did not answer.

Victor did.

"Yes."

The room went silent.

Julian sat back.

Victor's eyes filled with shame.

"Young," he whispered. "Stupid."

Celeste's mouth tightened. "Dad paid settlements. Roman disappeared. The official story was that he sold his interest. In reality, lawyers erased him from everything they could."

Julian watched his sister carefully. "How long have you known Nathan was connected to him?"

Celeste looked down. "I didn't know at first. Nathan became my attorney during my divorce. He was kind when everyone else was tired of hearing me complain. Later he told me things about Dad, about the old partnership, about money Dad supposedly hid from me."

Eleanor understood. "He fed your resentment."

Celeste gave a small, bitter smile. "He didn't have to feed much. I had plenty of my own."

"And Caroline?" Julian asked.

Celeste's eyes filled. "She warned me once. I thought she was trying to turn me against Nathan because she knew I was angry about the trust. She showed me one transfer and asked why Nathan's firm was moving money through agricultural companies. I told her she had become obsessed."

Victor made a low sound of pain.

Celeste looked at him. "Yes, Dad. I know now."

She continued, "The night Caroline photographed Nathan in Victor's study, I had followed him there. I found him using the signature plate. We fought. He told me Dad had authorized everything before the stroke and that the paperwork was only catching up. I wanted to believe him because the alternative was admitting our family attorney was stealing from us and I had helped him get closer."

Julian's voice was cold. "So you kept quiet."

"Yes."

"And Caroline died."

Celeste closed her eyes. "Yes."

Eleanor could see how badly Julian wanted a simple villain. Nathan had earned that title, but Celeste had built part of the road that led to him. There would be no clean version of the story where everyone except one man had been innocent.

"Nathan's firm?" Eleanor asked.

Celeste nodded. "Nathan's father was one of the lawyers."

There it was.

A second generation of secrets.

Julian looked at Nathan's phone on the evidence table.

"And Nathan has been working with Roman."

Ortiz said, "We found payments from entities tied to Roman Vale going into Cross & Vale accounts for more than a decade."

Eleanor frowned. "Cross and Vale."

Celeste looked at her.

"Nathan named the firm after him."

Julian laughed in disbelief. "And no one noticed?"

"Vale is not an uncommon name. Nathan always said it came from his mother's family."

Priya had already begun searching corporate records.

Within minutes she found Roman Vale linked to private aviation companies, offshore investment funds, and a charter service operating from a small executive airport forty miles west.

Nathan's message said get the plane ready.

The clock mattered.

Ortiz sent officers to the airport.

But Eleanor was still thinking about Caroline.

"Why did Nathan need Theo if he planned to flee?"

Julian looked at her.

"Leverage."

"Maybe. But he already had Theo and let us come close enough to rescue him. If escape was the only goal, Nathan would have left Blackwood before police arrived."

Priya nodded slowly. "He needed Victor too."

"For signatures," Julian said.

"Not only signatures."

Eleanor looked at Victor.

"What happened at Blackwood Farm?"

Caroline's letter had specifically told Celeste to ask.

Victor began shaking.

Celeste leaned close. "Dad?"

He whispered one word.

"Vault."

Julian frowned.

"What vault?"

Victor struggled for air.

"Under... clinic."

Celeste stared at him.

"There is no vault under the clinic."

Victor shook his head.

"Room... six."

Everyone looked at one another.

Room Six again.

Ortiz ordered officers still at Blackwood to search the neurological wing.

Behind a built-in cabinet in Room Six, they found a steel door.

The lock required two forms of authorization.

A numeric code.

And a biometric palm scan registered to Victor Sterling.

That explained why Nathan had taken him.

"What's inside?" Julian asked.

Victor closed his eyes.

"Originals."

"Of what?"

"Everything."

The early Sterling deals.

The shell companies.

The agreements with Roman.

The evidence proving Victor had participated before forcing Roman out.

And, according to Victor, one private partnership agreement giving Roman a dormant financial claim if certain concealed assets were ever recovered.

Nathan wanted the vault because control of those papers could destroy the Sterling family or make Roman unimaginably rich.

Celeste whispered, "Caroline found out."

Victor nodded.

"She... found key."

Eleanor remembered the house file.

Caroline had not simply discovered embezzlement.

She had found the original sin under everything.

"Did Nathan kill her because she knew about the vault?" Julian asked.

Victor's face crumpled.

"My fault."

Julian went still.

"What did you do?"

Victor tried to speak but could not.

Celeste took his hand.

"Dad."

He forced out the words.

"Told Nathan... stop her."

Julian stepped backward.

Eleanor's stomach dropped.

Victor began crying.

"Not kill. Never kill."

Julian stared at his father as though seeing him for the first time.

"You told Nathan to stop Caroline."

Victor nodded weakly.

"She threatened... police."

"She was right to."

"I was afraid."

Julian laughed bitterly.

Fear again.

Every disaster in this family seemed to begin with someone being afraid of losing money, power, reputation, or love.

Caroline had been the only person willing to lose all of it for the truth.

And she had died.

Julian walked out of the room.

Eleanor followed.

He stopped in the empty chapel down the hall.

For several seconds he said nothing.

Then, "I built my whole life on that man."

Eleanor stood beside him.

"You built your life on what you believed he was."

"Does that matter?"

"It matters to what you do next."

Julian looked at her.

His eyes were exhausted.

"I believed Maria over you."

"We are not doing that now."

"Why not?"

"Because guilt is useful only if it changes behavior. Otherwise it's just another way to make everything about yourself."

He stared.

Then a tired laugh escaped him.

"Caroline would have liked you."

Eleanor smiled sadly. "I hope so."

Julian looked toward the chapel windows.

"I don't know if you can forgive me."

"Neither do I."

He nodded.

It was not romantic.

It was honest.

And honesty felt more intimate than anything they had said in months.

Ortiz entered the chapel.

"They found the airport."

Nathan's SUV had been abandoned near a hangar.

A charter plane had taken off twenty minutes earlier.

Roman Vale was listed as passenger.

Nathan Cross was not.

Julian frowned. "So Nathan didn't leave?"

"No."

"Where is he?"

Ortiz held up Nathan's phone evidence report.

The device had received a location-triggered draft message that automatically saved when he reached the airport perimeter.

It contained four words.

VAULT FIRST. THEN THE BOY.

Eleanor's blood went cold.

"Theo is here."

Ortiz's face was grim.

"Yes. Which means Nathan may be coming back for him."

At that exact moment, the hospital fire alarm began to scream.

Red strobes flashed in the corridor.

Nurses shouted.

A speaker ordered evacuation of the west wing.

Julian and Eleanor ran toward Theo's room.

Smoke poured from a supply closet near the elevators.

Graham appeared through it.

"The baby's gone."

Julian stopped.

"What?"

"The nurse says a man in firefighter gear took him during the alarm."

Eleanor's heart slammed.

Ortiz swore and called security.

Julian turned toward the stairwell.

On the floor lay a single gold signet ring.

Nathan's.

And beside it, a folded note.

Julian opened it.

This time Nathan had written only one sentence.

BRING VICTOR TO ROOM SIX IF YOU WANT THEO BACK ALIVE.
