Chapter 6 - MATTEO'S CONFESSION

Elena reached Noah before anyone could stop her.

He was safe.

That fact mattered more than every secret in the house.

She pulled him against her chest while the two guards tried to explain that Mrs. Delgado had left after receiving a message on the internal phone.

"What message?"

"She said Mr. Bellini needed her in the laundry corridor."

Matteo's face hardened.

"I sent no message."

Adrien stood in the doorway.

"Then whoever took my console is still using internal routing."

Noah looked at all of them.

"Where's Teresa?"

Elena kissed his hair.

"We're finding her."

"She make pancakes."

"She will again."

Elena hoped she had not just lied to her son.

The house search began room by room.

Adrien insisted Elena remain with Noah.

She ignored him after six minutes.

"You are not walking around this estate with your son while Nathan is loose," he said.

"Then Noah stays with the women guards and I help."

"No."

"You don't know the service spaces. I do."

"Mrs. Delgado knows them better."

"She's missing."

Adrien stared at her.

Elena folded her arms.

"You can waste time arguing with me or use the fact that I've spent three months carrying linens through every corridor in this house."

Matteo almost smiled.

Adrien noticed.

"Don't encourage her."

"I didn't say anything."

"Your face did."

They searched the laundry level first.

A service cart blocked one narrow corridor. Behind it, a utility door stood open.

Elena knew the room.

"This is supposed to be storage."

Inside, shelves had been moved away from the wall.

A passage opened behind them.

Fresh blood marked the floor.

Elena stopped breathing.

"Teresa."

They followed the trail.

It ended at a small maintenance chamber where Mrs. Delgado sat against the wall holding a towel to her forehead.

She was conscious.

Elena dropped beside her.

"What happened?"

"Nathan."

Mrs. Delgado's voice shook with anger more than fear.

"He asked where Luca hid the second copy. I told him I didn't know. He didn't believe me."

Adrien crouched.

"Second copy of what?"

"The ledger."

"There is another?"

"Luca told Marcus he would never keep only one copy. Your father wrote that in his notes."

Matteo looked toward the passage.

"Where did Nathan go?"

Mrs. Delgado pointed deeper into the walls.

"Toward the old garage."

They found the garage door open.

One vintage car was missing.

The gate logs showed no exit because the old garage connected to a private road outside the modern sensor grid.

Adrien looked at Matteo.

"You knew about that road?"

Matteo's silence lasted too long.

"Yes."

Elena saw Adrien's face change.

"Why wasn't it secured?"

"Because your father told my father never to close it. Emergency route."

"My father is dead."

"I know."

Adrien stepped closer.

"How many things in this house are you still doing because dead men told your father something?"

Matteo looked at him.

Then the fight went out of his face.

"More than you know."

Adrien went still.

"Then start talking."

They moved Mrs. Delgado to the infirmary. Noah stayed with her, delighted that she was alive enough to complain about the hospital-style pillows.

In the security office, Matteo closed the door.

"My father Carlo worked for yours before I did. You know that."

Adrien nodded.

"He handled problems nobody put on payroll sheets."

"I know."

"What you don't know is that after Marcus died, Carlo believed Victor had arranged it."

Adrien's eyes hardened.

"Based on what?"

"Dr. Price's payment. The note. A call Victor made from a burner that night. Carlo couldn't prove it. Then Victor came to him with copies of illegal transactions signed by Marcus."

"The ghost routes."

"Yes. Victor said if Carlo accused him, he would release documents making your father look like the architect of everything."

"So Carlo stayed quiet."

Matteo nodded.

"He protected your father's reputation. Or told himself he did."

Adrien laughed without humor.

"Wonderful family tradition."

Matteo accepted the blow.

"Before Carlo died, he gave me one instruction: if anyone ever comes asking about Luca Moreno, protect Elena Marquez and the child."

Elena stared at him.

"You knew my name before I came here."

"Yes."

"You said nothing."

"Because when your application appeared, I assumed it was coincidence. Then I checked the agency and found the corporate registration was fake."

Adrien's voice became dangerous.

"You knew she was placed here?"

"I suspected."

"And you didn't tell me."

"I wanted to know who would move first."

Adrien's fist hit the desk.

Elena flinched.

Matteo did not.

"A glass cut her hand. Nathan attacked Teresa. Noah is in danger because you wanted to see who moved first?"

"I thought I could control it."

"You thought wrong."

Matteo's jaw tightened.

"Yes."

The word seemed to cost him something.

Elena looked at the man whose name had appeared on the deleted video.

"Did you delete the eleven seconds?"

"No."

"But you knew someone wanted me here."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"I think Victor believed Luca hid the second ledger with you."

Elena shook her head.

"I didn't even know there was a first."

"Victor may not have known that. If he placed you inside the estate, maybe he expected the house to trigger something. A memory. A hidden message. Maybe he thought Marcus left instructions here for you."

Adrien looked toward Luca's microSD card.

"And when she started moving through the east hall on a night Victor was present, Nathan scared her away from it."

Matteo nodded.

"Then deleted the footage using my console to make you doubt me."

"Why not just kill me?" Elena asked.

The room went silent.

Matteo answered carefully.

"Because Victor doesn't know where the second ledger is. If you die before he finds it, he may never know."

Elena felt sick.

Adrien's eyes hardened.

"Then we find it first."

Matteo reached into his jacket.

Adrien's security men immediately tensed.

Matteo slowly removed a small key.

"My father left me this too."

"What does it open?"

"A locker at an old boxing gym in Yonkers. Carlo said only open it if Elena Marquez appears inside Blackwood House and Victor Hale notices."

Elena almost laughed from disbelief.

"Your families really enjoyed instructions."

Matteo gave her a tired smile.

"It was how cowards made courage portable."

Then Adrien looked at Matteo.

"Twenty-five years," he said.

Matteo's expression tightened.

"I know."

"You stood beside me at my father's funeral. You helped me clean his office out. You watched me spend six years believing I knew how he died."

"I know."

"Stop saying that."

Matteo swallowed.

Adrien's anger was not loud now. It was wounded, which Elena realized was harder for both men.

"You decided what I could handle," Adrien said. "You did exactly what my father did. Exactly what Carlo did. You called secrecy protection because it sounded better than fear."

Matteo looked at the floor.

"You're right."

Adrien seemed almost disappointed by the surrender.

Matteo continued. "If you want me gone after this, I'll go. But not while Victor is moving. Not while Elena and Noah are targets. I can lose your trust later."

Adrien stared at him.

"You already did."

Matteo nodded. "Then let me earn whatever comes after it."

Elena looked between them and understood that loyalty was not the absence of betrayal. Sometimes it was what people did after the betrayal had finally been named.

Adrien looked at the key.

"We go now."

"No," Elena said.

Both men looked at her.

"Nathan escaped less than an hour ago. Victor knows this estate is compromised. If you leave openly, they'll watch you."

Adrien studied her.

"What do you suggest?"

"Do what people like Victor expect least."

"Which is?"

"Let the maid leave."

Adrien's eyes narrowed.

Elena continued.

"I leave through the employee gate in my own car. Matteo hides in the back. You follow separately after twenty minutes. If they're watching, they see me scared and leaving exactly like they wanted."

"Absolutely not."

"They need me alive. You just said so."

"Need is not the same as safe."

"No. But you told me fear should make me careful, not stupid."

Adrien looked annoyed that she remembered.

Matteo looked impressed.

Adrien glared at him.

"Stop doing that with your face."

At 2:08 a.m., Elena drove out of Blackwood House in her ten-year-old Honda with Matteo hidden beneath a blanket behind the rear seats.

Rain had slowed to mist.

A dark SUV pulled from a roadside turnout three minutes later.

"We're followed," Elena whispered.

Matteo's voice came from behind her.

"Good."

"You and Adrien have disturbing definitions of good."

The SUV stayed with them toward Yonkers.

At the boxing gym, Elena parked beneath a broken streetlight.

Matteo emerged.

Adrien arrived from another direction with two men.

Inside the locker they found an old canvas gym bag.

No ledger.

Only a photograph and a cassette tape.

The photograph showed Marcus Blackwood, Carlo Bellini, and Luca Moreno standing beside a younger Victor Hale.

On the back, Carlo had written:

THE FOUR MEN WHO KNEW.

THREE ARE DEAD IF YOU'RE READING THIS.

Elena counted.

Marcus. Dead.

Carlo. Dead.

Luca. Dead.

Victor.

Alive.

Adrien picked up the cassette.

A handwritten label carried one word.

CONFESSION.

Before they could play it, glass shattered at the front of the gym.

A bullet tore into the locker door inches from Matteo's head.

Adrien dragged Elena to the floor.

Another shot cracked through the dark.

Someone had followed them not to watch.

Someone had followed them to make sure the fourth man stayed the only one alive long enough to control the story.
