PART 5: THE RECKONING OF DAWN

The rain finally began to ease into a light, misty drizzle as the neighborhood watched in stunned silence. Handcuffs clicked shut around Richard’s wrists, his defiant screams and frantic denials bouncing uselessly off the wet pavement as he was shoved into the back of a police cruiser. Jessica was cuffed moments later, her designer blue silk dress stained with mud as she was led away in utter disgrace.

Clara stood tall on the sidewalk, wrapped in a warm wool blanket that one of the female officers had gently draped over her shoulders. She looked down at the ruined red dress and her bare, scratched feet, realizing that while the scars of this betrayal would take time to heal, her life was finally entirely her own.

The lead federal agent handed Clara a secure leather briefcase containing the official asset-recovery paperwork, confirming that all wrongfully seized funds, along with complete ownership of Vance Architectural Firm, had been legally restored to her name.

"It's over, Ms. Vance," the agent said respectfully. "You can go home now."

Clara took a deep, steady breath of the crisp, rain-washed air. She turned her back on the house that had briefly been her gilded cage, knowing she would sell it by morning. Walking toward the waiting transport vehicle with her head held high, Clara looked toward the brightening horizon where the clouds were finally breaking apart. The trap had sprung, but it was the architects of her misery who had locked themselves inside.
