PART 3: THE MIDNIGHT CEREMONY

Being banned from the hospital by Eleanor's opportunistic children did not stop Julian. Where law and bureaucracy failed, fierce loyalty and clever planning prevailed. With the help of a sympathetic night-shift nurse named Clara—who had witnessed firsthand the genuine love Julian showed Eleanor compared to the cold indifference of her biological children—a plan was set into motion.

At midnight, under the cover of quiet hospital corridors and dim fluorescent lights, Julian slipped into Room 412 carrying a small velvet box and a bouquet of fresh white jasmine, Eleanor’s absolute favorite flower. Eleanor was awake, propped up against her pillows, her breathing shallow but her eyes wide with nervous anticipation.

"You're late, architect," Eleanor whispered with a weak, playful smirk as Julian gently closed the door behind him.

"Traffic in the hallway was terrible," Julian murmured back, dropping to one knee beside her hospital bed.

He didn't need a grand cathedral or a crowd of disapproving cynics. The quiet hospital room, illuminated only by the soft glow of the city lights outside, became the most sacred cathedral on earth. Julian pulled out two simple gold bands—rings they had secretly ordered weeks prior, sized to fit them both perfectly.

"Eleanor, you brought light into my world when everything else was shadows," Julian spoke softly, his voice steady and full of unshakeable devotion. "Will you take this ring, and my heart, for whatever time we have left under the sun?"

Tears welled up in Eleanor’s aged eyes as she reached out with her trembling hand, her fingers sliding the ring onto Julian’s finger before he gently slipped the matching band onto hers. "In every lifetime, Julian," she whispered back, pulling him close in a tender embrace.

They were legally married by a traveling notary the next morning, just hours before Eleanor’s children were scheduled to arrive with court orders. By the time the family stormed through the hospital doors demanding access, Julian was already registered as Eleanor’s legal spouse and primary medical proxy.
