Part 2: The Trap They Believed They Had Prepared for Me

Claire Harper’s law office overlooked downtown Denver, but I barely

noticed the skyline as I rushed inside. My hands still trembled from

everything I had witnessed at the airport. She greeted me with a firm

handshake instead of a hug, immediately sensing this was no ordinary

marital dispute.

‘Start from the beginning,’ she said.

I placed my phone on her desk and played the recording.

The room fell silent.

Julian’s voice echoed clearly through the speakers.

‘That fool is about to lose everything.’

Claire never interrupted. She simply listened, taking notes as the

recording continued. When it ended, she leaned back in her chair.

‘This changes everything,’ she said quietly.

I stared at her.

‘How bad is it?’

‘For him?’ she replied. ‘Potentially catastrophic.’

She explained that the recording suggested more than infidelity. It

pointed toward conspiracy, financial deception, and possible fraud. But

recordings alone would not be enough.

‘We need documents.’

I nodded and opened my cloud storage.

Every contract Julian had ever asked me to sign had been scanned the

same day. Claire smiled for the first time.

‘Good. Now let’s compare these with whatever he files.’

For the next two hours we examined every page.

Then Claire suddenly stopped.

‘Look at this signature block.’

At first I couldn’t see the problem.

She enlarged the document on her computer.

The version stored in my cloud listed me as a minority shareholder.

Another version that Julian had emailed weeks later listed him as the

sole owner.

Someone had altered the agreement after I signed it.

Claire’s expression hardened.

‘If this forged version is the one he intends to use, he’s committed a

serious crime.’

A strange calm settled over me.

The fear that had consumed me at the airport slowly transformed into

determination.

Julian believed I was broken.

He had no idea that every lie he had told was leaving behind evidence.

Claire closed the laptop.

‘Don’t confront him.’

‘Don’t tell anyone.’

‘From this moment forward, we let him believe his plan is working.’

I took a slow breath.

The counterattack had officially begun.

Claire refused to celebrate too early. “One forged document doesn’t

guarantee a conviction,” she warned. “We need to know how far Julian has

gone.”

She contacted a trusted forensic document examiner while I logged into

every financial account I owned. At first everything looked normal. My

savings remained untouched, my retirement fund was still intact, and my

checking account showed nothing unusual.

Then I noticed a pending authorization.

A corporate account I barely recognized had been granted limited access

to one of my investment portfolios.

“Claire…”

She hurried to my side.

The authorization carried Julian’s company name.

“He’s already trying to move your assets,” she said grimly.

Fortunately, the transfer required a final verification that had not yet

been completed. Claire immediately instructed me to freeze every

account, notify the bank’s fraud department, and revoke every power of

attorney Julian might attempt to use.

For the next several hours, phone calls filled the office.

Every canceled authorization felt like another door closing in Julian’s

face.

Late that afternoon Claire’s investigator called.

“There may be another woman involved besides the mistress,” he reported.

“Someone inside Julian’s company has been preparing corporate paperwork

after business hours.”

Claire looked at me.

“This isn’t just an affair anymore. It’s an organized scheme.”

As evening approached, I finally returned home.

The house felt strangely quiet.

Julian hadn’t arrived yet.

Standing in my father’s workshop, I ran my hand across the old wooden

workbench he had built himself.

“I won’t lose this,” I whispered.

A car door slammed outside.

Headlights swept across the living room windows.

Julian was home.

I quickly wiped away every trace of emotion before he stepped through

the front door wearing the same confident smile I had trusted for years.

“Hey, sweetheart,” he said casually.

“How was your day?”

I smiled back.

“It was… unforgettable.”

He had no idea that every move he made from this moment forward was

May you like

already being anticipated.

End of Part 2.
