Part 4: The Trap They Believed They Had Prepared for Me

The courthouse in downtown Denver looked calm from the outside, but
inside, every hallway buzzed with quiet tension. Julian arrived wearing
an expensive charcoal suit, his confidence almost theatrical. Beside him
stood the same brunette from the airport, pretending to be nothing more
than a business associate.
When he saw me, he smiled.
“I hope we can keep this civil,” he said.
I returned the smile.
“So do I.”
Claire gently touched my arm before we entered the courtroom.
“Remember,” she whispered, “today you don’t need to defeat him. You only
need to let him reveal who he really is.”
The hearing began with routine introductions. Julian’s attorney argued
that the marriage had broken down naturally and insisted Julian had
built the majority of our wealth through his successful company.
Claire didn’t interrupt.
She simply took notes.
Then the judge asked Julian a direct question.
“Did your wife knowingly approve every financial transfer related to the
company?”
Without hesitation, Julian answered, “Yes, Your Honor. She understood
every document she signed.”
Claire slowly stood.
“Your Honor, we request permission to reserve our documentary evidence
until the next stage, but we would like Mr. Walker’s statement entered
into the record exactly as given.”
Julian nodded confidently, believing his answer had strengthened his
case.
He had no idea that Claire wanted him committed to that version of
events before presenting the original signed documents and forensic
analysis.
As the hearing concluded, Julian walked past me with quiet satisfaction.
“You should have settled,” he murmured.
I looked him straight in the eyes.
“I think you’ll regret saying that.”
For the first time since the airport, I saw the faintest flicker of
uncertainty cross his face.
He couldn’t explain why.
But somewhere deep inside, he had finally begun to sense that his
perfect plan was starting to crack.
The second hearing began with an entirely different atmosphere. Julian
entered the courtroom wearing the same confident smile, but it faded the
moment Claire wheeled in three neatly labeled evidence boxes.
His attorney frowned.
“What’s all this?”
Claire answered calmly. “The truth.”
The judge granted permission for the evidence to be presented.
Claire began with the financial records.
A forensic accountant testified that several ownership documents
contained alterations made after my signatures had been placed on the
originals. Enlarged copies were displayed on a courtroom monitor,
highlighting differences in dates, formatting, and electronic metadata.
Julian shifted uneasily.
His attorney objected, but the expert explained every discrepancy in
clear detail.
Next came the bank investigator.
He confirmed that multiple transfer requests had been initiated from
Julian’s company to accounts connected with shell corporations. One of
those corporations shared an address with the apartment where Julian’s
mistress lived.
The courtroom grew silent.
Julian glanced toward the brunette seated behind him.
She avoided his eyes.
Then Claire delivered the final blow.
She held up my phone.
“Your Honor, this recording was made at Denver International Airport.”
The judge allowed the audio to be played.
Julian’s own voice filled the courtroom.
‘That fool is about to lose everything.’
‘Once the transfer goes through, she’s done.’
No one spoke.
Even Julian’s attorney slowly lowered his head.
The confidence Julian had worn for weeks disappeared completely.
For the first time, he looked afraid.
The judge recessed the hearing until the following morning, instructing
both parties to preserve all financial records.
As everyone stood to leave, Julian hurried toward me.
“This isn’t what it looks like,” he whispered desperately.
I looked at him with the same calm expression I had worn since the
airport.
May you like
“It finally looks exactly like the truth.”
