The Greenhouse Fire

Chapter 12 - The Greenhouse Fire

The Ashford greenhouse stretched behind the mansion like a glass cathedral.

Grant’s mother had filled it with rare orchids and winter roses. Edward had filled the central aisle with gasoline.

He stood near the furnace holding the medical case.

“Come closer and this disappears.”

Ava and Julian stopped at the entrance.

Rain struck the glass roof.

Edward looked at Ava.

“You were supposed to become an unnamed infant in a county cemetery.”

“You failed.”

“I underestimated a nurse.”

“You underestimated my mother.”

Edward’s smile vanished.

Rachel had spent years quietly collecting evidence through Louise. She tracked clinic payments, false patient files, and Victoria’s private accounts.

The letters Ava brought to the mansion were not only proof of paternity.

They were a map to the stolen money.

Edward opened the medical case.

“You think Grant came back for you? He came back for control.”

Ava looked toward the tunnel where Grant and Marcus approached.

“Maybe. But he came back.”

Edward struck a match.

Julian moved first.

He threw a metal watering can across the aisle. It hit Edward’s wrist, and the match fell into a wet planting bed instead of the fuel.

Edward pulled a pistol from his coat.

Grant stepped into view.

“Put it down.”

“You always did arrive after other people paid the price,” Edward said.

Grant did not argue.

Edward aimed toward Ava.

Julian pushed her behind a stone planter.

The pistol fired.

Glass shattered above them.

Marcus tackled Edward from the side. The weapon slid beneath a bench.

Edward kicked over a heater.

Flames reached the gasoline trail.

The greenhouse ignited.

Grant grabbed the medical case. Julian pulled Ava toward the side exit, but a burning beam fell between them.

Smoke filled the glass structure.

Ava found the emergency irrigation controls beneath the orchid table. She opened every valve.

Water erupted from ceiling pipes.

The flames weakened enough for firefighters to enter.

Marcus dragged Edward outside in handcuffs.

Grant carried the medical case through the rain.

Julian emerged last, coughing but alive.

Victoria watched from an upstairs window as police placed her brother in a vehicle.

The greenhouse she had used for society photographs burned behind him.

Ava stood with Grant and Julian beneath the storm.

For the first time, the three Ashford heirs looked less like rivals than survivors of the same architecture.

Inside the case, the certified DNA samples remained intact.

So did Rachel’s original hospital bracelet.

But one folder was missing.

The folder documenting who sabotaged Grant’s plane.

Edward had handed it to someone else.
