Rachel’s Last Letter

Chapter 07 - Rachel’s Last Letter

Ava had more than one letter.

Rachel Bennett died eight months earlier from pancreatic cancer. In the final week of her life, she gave Ava a locked metal box and said it should be opened only if Grant Ashford was publicly declared dead.

Ava had waited six months after the memorial before finding the courage.

The box contained photographs, hospital forms, and a voice recorder.

She brought it from her car after police cleared the front drive.

Rachel’s voice sounded thin but steady.

“Ava, if you are hearing this, Grant is gone or the people around him want the world to believe he is.”

Grant sat near the fireplace.

Rachel explained that Victoria visited her hospital room hours after Ava’s birth. She showed Rachel a photograph of Grant boarding a plane with another woman and claimed he had chosen marriage, money, and reputation over her.

Victoria offered Rachel fifty thousand dollars to sign a confidentiality agreement.

Rachel refused.

Edward Vale then told her the baby had developed fatal complications. He sedated Rachel and removed Ava from the nursery.

A young nurse named Louise Carter discovered the transfer and followed the ambulance to a private clinic. She rescued Ava before Edward could complete the disappearance.

Louise brought the baby back to Rachel and helped them leave the state under new names.

“Why didn’t she contact me?” Grant asked.

Rachel answered from the recording as though she heard him.

“Grant, I tried. Every letter came back. Every phone call reached someone who knew my location within hours. When Ava was four, a man followed her home from preschool. I stopped trying.”

Victoria looked toward the floor.

The recording continued.

Rachel had evidence that Victoria and Edward were using Ashford medical charities to bill for patients who did not exist. She believed Ava’s birth threatened the scheme because the founder’s trust would give Grant’s first biological child inspection rights over foundation accounts.

“They did not take Ava because Victoria hated me,” Rachel said. “They took her because she would someday have the right to open the books.”

Ava closed her eyes.

Her identity had been dangerous before she could speak.

Rachel’s final message was for Grant.

“I loved you. That does not excuse you for making it easy to remove us. You trusted the people who protected your comfort more than the woman asking you to look closer.”

The recorder clicked off.

Grant remained still.

Julian looked at Victoria.

“Tell me it is false.”

Victoria’s expression softened toward him.

“I did everything for you.”

“That is not an answer.”

“It is the only answer that matters.”

Julian stepped away from her.

For the first time in his life, the son Victoria claimed to protect looked at her as though she were a stranger.
