THE CHILD IN THE MAID DRESS / Chapter 4 / 9

CHAPTER 5 – THE ROOM THAT CHOSE SILENCE

No one in the foyer could pretend they had not seen.

That was Julian’s first decision.

He looked around slowly, making each guard, each staff member, each silent witness meet his eyes. Some looked ashamed. Some terrified. One older housekeeper began to cry without sound.

“Who ordered this?” Julian asked.

No one answered.

Celeste recovered a fraction of her composure. “Julian, this is not what it looks like.”

He did not look at her. “I asked the room.”

The silence thickened.

Lily remained on her knees, frozen between hope and fear.

Julian crouched carefully in front of her, setting the briefcase on the floor beside him without letting it fall. His face softened only for her.

“Can you stand, sweetheart?”

Lily nodded, but her legs shook when she tried.

Julian took off his suit jacket and wrapped it gently around her shoulders. He did not touch her wrist until she reached for his hand first.

That mattered.

“Did she make you wear this?” he asked quietly.

Lily’s eyes flicked toward Celeste.

Julian saw.

Again, enough.

He stood and turned to the staff.

“Mrs. Hayes,” he said.

The room shifted. The former nanny’s name had not been spoken in weeks.

The young staff member near the column swallowed. “She was dismissed, sir.”

“By whom?”

Everyone knew.

Julian looked at Celeste.

Her jaw tightened. “She undermined household authority.”

“No,” said a quiet voice.

It came from the older housekeeper, Marta, who had served the family for fifteen years.

Celeste turned sharply. “Marta.”

But something had changed. Julian was home. Lily was wrapped in his jacket. The balance of fear had moved.

Marta lifted her chin. “Mrs. Hayes protected the child.”

Celeste’s face went pale.

Julian nodded once, as if filing the statement into a ledger no one would escape.

May you like

“Continue.”

And the room that had chosen silence began, one voice at a time, to betray the woman in white.
