THE CHILD IN THE MAID DRESS / Chapter 7 / 9

CHAPTER 8 – THE BRIEFCASE

Inside Julian’s black leather briefcase was the document Celeste had been waiting for.

A revised premarital agreement.

She believed he had brought it home from London to sign before their wedding announcement. She had built her next month around that signature: access, status, legal foothold, a place in the Whitmore trust structure.

Julian opened the briefcase in his study while his attorney watched by video call.

The agreement lay on top.

He looked at it for a long moment, then placed it into the shredder.

Celeste, standing near the door with a security guard behind her, gasped. “Julian!”

He did not look up until the last page disappeared.

“You wanted my name,” he said. “You were willing to step over my child to reach it.”

“I was trying to make her stronger.”

“You made her afraid.”

Celeste’s mouth opened, then closed.

There was no elegant response to that.

Julian’s attorney began outlining next steps: removal from the residence, termination of household authority, preservation of surveillance footage, witness statements, child welfare documentation, civil action if necessary. Celeste listened as if the words were being spoken underwater.

The mansion had turned against her.

Not because houses have morals.

Because the man who owned it finally opened his eyes.

Later that night, after Celeste was escorted out through the same double doors Julian had entered, Lily sat in her father’s study wearing pajamas and wrapped in a blanket. Mrs. Hayes sat nearby with tea. The gray maid dress had been bagged as evidence and removed from Lily’s sight.

Julian knelt in front of his daughter.

“I’m sorry,” he said.

Lily looked at him with tired eyes. “Are you mad at me?”

The question nearly destroyed him.

“No,” he said, voice breaking. “Never.”

“She said you would be.”

He closed his eyes.

Then he opened them and told her the truth he should have protected better.

“She lied.”

Lily nodded slowly.

“Can I sleep near your room tonight?”

May you like

Julian held out his hand.

“You can sleep wherever you feel safe.”
