Chapter 4 - THE BROTHER MICHAEL FEARED

Anthony escaped custody because one of the federal transport officers was on his payroll.
That fact hit the news before breakfast.
By noon, three agencies were hunting him.
He still controlled enough old money to buy cracks in institutions.
Luca hated that.
I understood.
Power survives through ordinary doors.
A guard.
A clerk.
A driver.
One person deciding rules do not apply today.
Anthony sent instructions.
Old Moretti slaughterhouse.
Six p.m.
Trust documents.
Victor.
Vanessa.
Luca.
No police.
Of course.
We involved police.
Of course.
The trust documents were not paper.
The key access sat inside Michael’s old private bank account.
Two guardians needed to authenticate.
Luca and Vanessa.
Anthony wanted them alive.
For now.
Gabriel was leverage.
Elias insisted on coming.
Luca refused.
Elias said:
“I killed Michael.”
“No.”
“I gave the injection.”
“You were used.”
“That doesn’t change my hand.”
“It changes guilt.”
Elias looked at him.
“You sound like your mother.”
Luca froze.
“Don’t.”
Elias nodded.
Fair.
Then Vanessa asked:
“What did my mother sound like?”
Victor closed his eyes.
We all turned.
“Where is she?” Vanessa asked.
Victor did not answer.
Her face changed.
“My mother died when I was twelve.”
“No.”
Of course.
Another death.
Another lie.
Victor said:
“She left.”
“You told me cancer.”
“She had cancer.”
“Then?”
“She survived treatment.”
“And left me?”
Victor’s voice softened.
“She left me.”
Not Vanessa.
Him.
That distinction mattered.
“Where?”
“I don’t know.”
“You always know.”
“No.”
“For once?”
“Yes.”
Vanessa laughed bitterly.
“Convenient.”
Victor looked old.
“She found out about the trust games. About Nico. About Michael.”
“Did she know Gabriel lived?”
“Later.”
Vanessa stared.
“And she didn’t tell me.”
“She tried.”
“How?”
“Letters.”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
“Where are they?”
Victor said nothing.
She slapped him.
Hard.
No one stopped her.
“Where?”
“Safe.”
“What safe?”
“My old office.”
Of course.
We retrieved them.
Seventeen letters.
All unopened.
Victor had intercepted them.
Vanessa read the first.
Sweetheart, your father told you I died because I would not come back.
That sentence shattered her.
She sat on the office floor.
I sat nearby.
Not touching.
Her mother, Isabella Bellini, had left after Victor threatened Nico.
She believed Vanessa would be safer if she disappeared.
Again.
Same mistake.
Different mother.
The last letter:
If you ever discover Gabriel is alive, do not let Victor or the Morettis turn him into inheritance.
Let him be a boy.
Vanessa cried.
Then folded the letters carefully.
At five, we prepared for the slaughterhouse.
Federal teams positioned blocks away.
Victor wore a wire.
Vanessa too.
Luca carried a dummy access token.
No real trust transfer could occur without Gabriel’s biometric confirmation at a bank.
Anthony might not know.
Good.
At six, we entered.
I stayed outside with command.
For once.
I hated it.
Stayed anyway.
Feed showed Anthony inside.
Gabriel tied but unharmed.
One man beside him.
Anthony looked at Luca.
“Where’s Elias?”
“Not invited.”
“Coward.”
“No.”
Luca looked at Gabriel.
“Are you hurt?”
“No.”
The boy tried to sound brave.
Vanessa cried silently.
Anthony smiled.
“Family reunion.”
Victor said:
“Release him.”
Anthony laughed.
“You spent your life taking children from people.”
Victor flinched.
Good.
Anthony continued.
“Now you understand.”
Luca placed the dummy token on a steel table.
“Access.”
Anthony picked it up.
“Both signatures?”
“Ready.”
Vanessa stepped forward.
“Leo first.”
Gabriel frowned.
“My name is Gabriel.”
Vanessa blinked.
“Gabriel first.”
Good correction.
Anthony nodded to his man.
Rope cut.
Gabriel stood.
Then Anthony stopped him with a hand on his shoulder.
“Authenticate first.”
Luca said:
“No.”
Anthony drew a gun.
Victor moved.
Gunfire.
Feed shook.
I ran inside.
Bad.
Again.
Marco shouted behind me.
Inside, Gabriel crawled beneath the table.
Vanessa threw herself toward him.
Luca tackled Anthony.
Victor fired at Anthony’s man.
Missed.
Marco entered.
Federal agents breached.
Anthony grabbed Vanessa by the throat.
Gun to her side.
“Back!”
Everyone froze.
Gabriel screamed.
“Mom!”
Vanessa closed her eyes.
First time.
He called her Mom.
Anthony heard it too.
“Touching.”
Luca’s face became terrifyingly calm.
“Let her go.”
“Trust.”
“Worthless.”
Anthony frowned.
“It requires Gabriel.”
Silence.
Luca smiled slightly.
Michael had protected the trust better than Anthony knew.
Anthony’s face changed.
“You’re lying.”
Victor laughed.
“He isn’t.”
Anthony looked at him.
“You knew?”
“Michael told me.”
Another secret.
Anthony raised the gun toward Victor.
Vanessa moved.
Bit his hand.
Hard.
He cursed.
Luca hit him.
Gun fell.
Agents swarmed.
Gabriel crawled into my arms.
I held him only because he grabbed me first.
Vanessa sat on the floor.
Blood on her lip.
Alive.
Anthony was arrested.
Really arrested this time.
Three agencies.
No friendly transport officer.
Victor stared at his brother-in-law enemy.
Then at Luca.
“Michael feared Anthony.”
“Why?”
“Because Anthony wanted control more than money.”
Anthony shouted from the floor:
“Michael was weak.”
Luca looked at him.
“No.”
“He protected a bastard child.”
Gabriel flinched.
Luca crossed the room.
“Do not call him that.”
Anthony smiled.
“There’s the family.”
Luca stopped.
Then stepped back.
Good.
No violence.
Not for Anthony.
Afterward, Gabriel sat in an ambulance between Vanessa and me.
He looked at Vanessa.
“You came.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because you are my son.”
He thought.
“Do I have to live with you?”
Her face broke.
“No.”
Good.
“Do I have to call you Mom?”
“No.”
“Can I?”
She cried.
“Yes.”
He leaned against her shoulder.
Not forgiveness.
Beginning.
Then Marco came over.
“They found Elias.”
Luca turned.
“Where?”
“Back at the greenhouse.”
“What is he doing?”
“Digging.”
“Why?”
Marco’s face changed.
“He says Michael buried one last thing there.”
We returned.
Elias knelt in red clay beside Atlas.
A small steel box lay open.
Inside:
Michael’s final journal.
And one sealed laboratory report.
TOXICOLOGY — MICHAEL MORETTI.
Cause:
lethal digoxin concentration.
Administered through mislabeled syringe.
Fingerprint on syringe:
ANTHONY MORETTI.
Elias started crying.
“I didn’t kill him.”
Luca knelt beside him.
“No.”
Elias covered his face.
For eleven years he believed his hand had killed the man he served.
Anthony had switched the syringe.
Elias delivered it.
But Anthony murdered Michael.
Proof.
Finally.
Then the journal opened to one marked page.
If Anthony kills me, do not let Matteo avenge me.
Make him expose me too.
Luca read.
His face hardened.
“Expose what?”
The next page answered.
Michael had signed off on the corruption years earlier.
Not all.
Enough.
He had benefited.
Regretted.
Tried to undo it.
But the truth was not Anthony evil, Michael good.
It was messier.
Michael had helped build the machine that later killed Nico and eventually killed him.
Luca closed the journal.
“Then we expose all of it.”
Victor stared.
“That destroys the Moretti name.”
Luca looked at him.
“Maybe the name needs to survive less than the truth does.”
Gabriel watched him.
That boy saw everything.
Luca noticed.
Then added:
“But not tonight.”
May you like
Good.
Children deserve sleep before family reckonings.
