Chapter 4 - MICHAEL'S DEBT

Michael Moretti had been dead eleven years.
Until that morning, Luca remembered him as strict, feared, and loyal to family above everything.
The audio changed one word.
Loyal.
Loyal to what?
Family?
Power?
A secret Victor held?
Marco found an old safe-deposit record in Michael’s private files.
Box 716.
Midwest Continental Bank.
Still active.
Authorized access transferred to Luca after Michael’s death.
Luca had never opened it.
“Why?” I asked.
He looked at me.
“Because nobody told me it existed.”
Of course.
We went with an attorney and federal investigator.
No more private evidence trips.
Progress.
Box 716 contained three things.
A black ledger.
A VHS tape.
A sealed letter.
TO LUCA.
He opened the letter first.
Son,
If Paolo ever asks you why I worked with Victor Bellini, tell him I was a coward.
Luca stopped.
Paolo had been alive when Michael wrote this.
Why address Luca?
The letter continued.
Victor owns proof that Anthony Moretti ordered the murder of a city inspector in 1998.
Anthony.
Luca’s uncle.
Dead? No.
Actually imprisoned overseas? Family stories differed.
Michael continued.
I helped cover it.
There it was.
Not innocence.
Complicity.
Victor blackmailed Michael for years using that evidence.
Construction contracts.
Political favors.
Joint companies.
Every time Michael tried to leave, Victor threatened to expose the inspector murder and Michael’s cover-up.
Then Michael wrote:
I told myself I protected Luca and Paolo from losing the family.
What I protected was the family name.
They are not the same.
Luca sat in the bank vault room.
Silent.
I looked away.
Privacy.
He said:
“Stay.”
So I did.
The black ledger listed Bellini payments.
Judges.
Inspectors.
Police.
Contractors.
And Michael Moretti.
Not always receiving.
Sometimes paying.
The families were not true enemies.
They were partners who occasionally hated each other.
That was worse.
The VHS tape required conversion.
Federal tech handled it.
Michael appeared on screen.
Older.
Tired.
He spoke directly to camera.
“Luca, if you are watching this, then I failed to tell you while alive.”
Luca laughed bitterly.
Apparently every father in wealthy families recorded apologies instead of having conversations.
Michael explained.
Victor Bellini helped Anthony Moretti hide the inspector murder.
Michael learned after.
Instead of going to police, he destroyed evidence to protect his brother.
Victor kept a copy.
That copy became a leash.
When Paolo discovered irregular construction payments, Michael ordered him to stop.
Not because Paolo was wrong.
Because Michael knew Victor would retaliate.
Then Michael said:
“If Victor threatens the boy, give him whatever he wants.”
The boy.
Leo?
No.
Leo was not born when Michael recorded the tape.
Luca frowned.
“What boy?”
The answer came next.
“Anthony’s son.”
Silence.
Anthony Moretti had a son.
Hidden.
Michael raised him under another name after Anthony went to prison.
Who?
The tape said:
“Marco.”
We all turned.
Marco’s face went white.
Luca stared at his head of security.
“What?”
Marco stepped back.
“I didn’t know.”
Michael continued.
“Marco Santini is Anthony’s child. His mother asked me never to tell him.”
Marco sat.
The strongest man in the room suddenly looked ten years old.
Luca whispered:
“You’re my cousin.”
Marco laughed once.
Apparently.
Victor knew.
That was the leverage.
If Michael broke the agreement, Victor threatened to expose Marco’s identity to Anthony’s enemies.
Michael believed Marco would be killed.
So he paid.
Signed.
Obeyed.
Again: protection through secrecy.
Marco looked at the floor.
“Did my mother know?”
The tape answered.
“She begged me.”
Marco closed his eyes.
His mother, Rosa Santini, died when he was seventeen.
He thought his father abandoned them.
Actually, his father was Anthony Moretti.
A man whose crimes made him a target.
Michael hid Marco inside his own security organization years later, never telling him why.
Luca asked:
“Does Victor know Marco works for me?”
“Yes,” the investigator said.
“Then why not use him now?”
Marco looked up.
“Maybe he did.”
His phone.
His hiring.
His promotions.
Had Victor influenced them?
Another layer.
Then the sealed bank records revealed a payment made three days before Paolo’s death.
Two hundred thousand dollars.
To a company owned by Dr. Hale.
Authorized by Victor Bellini.
And countersigned by:
Marco Santini.
Marco stared.
“I never signed that.”
His signature had been forged too.
Same low cross on the t.
Same style as Paolo’s forged signature.
One forger.
Who?
The bank’s notary record listed a witness.
Vanessa Bellini.
Luca closed his eyes.
She had notarized both.
Paolo’s transfer.
Marco’s authorization.
She claimed fear.
Maybe true.
Still participation.
Then Marco’s phone rang.
Unknown number.
He answered.
Victor Bellini.
Alive voice.
Cold.
“Hello, son.”
Marco went completely still.
Not because Victor was his father.
Because Victor knew the secret.
May you like
And he had just called Marco before any public record revealed it.
Victor had been watching us in real time.
