Chapter 3 - MICHAEL'S PLAN

Luca watched the video twice.
Then a third time.
Michael standing behind Vale.
Anna tied to a chair.
The brother Luca thought he had rescued looked completely capable of walking away.
“No,” Luca said.
Lily did not argue immediately.
She waited.
Finally:
“Both things can be true.”
He looked at her.
“What?”
“He can have been held before and still be working with Vale now.”
Daniel entered with Michael’s tox screen.
“He had sedatives in his blood.”
Luca’s expression sharpened.
“So he was drugged.”
“Yes. But not enough to explain everything.”
Luca looked away.
Lily lowered her voice.
“We need Anna.”
He nodded.
They traced her last call to an industrial park in Cicero.
Vale demanded the laptop.
Federal agents prepared a controlled exchange.
Luca told Lily she would not go.
She said, “You do not get to use me as bait.”
“I’m doing the opposite.”
“You’re deciding for me.”
He stopped.
The lesson landed.
“Fine,” he said.
Lily blinked.
“That was fast.”
“Painful growth.”
She carried a duplicate laptop into the warehouse.
Anna sat tied to the same chair.
Vale stood behind her.
Lily placed the laptop on a table.
“Let her go.”
Vale smiled.
“You negotiate aggressively for household staff.”
“I’m not household staff right now.”
“What are you?”
“Annoyed.”
Anna almost laughed.
Then a gun clicked behind Lily.
Michael.
“Don’t turn around.”
She did not.
“You should not have come,” he said.
“That opinion is becoming repetitive.”
Michael moved into view.
His face looked exhausted.
Not evil.
That did not make him safe.
“Give Vale the cake drive.”
“I don’t have it.”
“Luca does.”
“Why do you want it?”
“Because Anna’s recording destroys everything.”
“Your plan?”
“Our family.”
“Those are not the same thing.”
His eyes flashed.
“You don’t understand what it is to spend your whole life second.”
“To Luca?”
“To everyone.”
Lily looked at him.
“So you forged him?”
“I protected myself.”
“By fabricating medical records?”
“That part was Vanessa.”
“You paid for it.”
Silence.
Anna closed her eyes.
Lily continued.
“You helped create a fake pregnancy plan.”
“I didn’t know about that.”
“People around here know surprisingly little about crimes they help create.”
Michael’s gun lowered slightly.
Vale said, “Michael.”
He raised it again.
Then Anna said:
“Tell Lily about the cake.”
Everyone froze.
“What about it?” Lily asked.
Michael’s face changed.
Anna continued.
“Vanessa changed the filling.”
Lily’s stomach dropped.
“To what?”
“Not filling.”
Vale stepped toward Anna.
Lily blocked him.
Anna looked at her.
“A drug.”
“For Luca?”
“Yes.”
The first slice would be his.
Digitalis.
Enough to cause dizziness, confusion, heart rhythm problems.
Maybe not kill him.
But enough to send him to a hospital.
Then altered records would support a claim that Luca had been medically unstable.
Michael whispered, “I backed out.”
“When?”
“The night I disappeared.”
Anna laughed bitterly.
“You came back before Vale took me.”
Michael froze.
Lily saw another truth surface.
Michael had not returned only to save Anna.
He still wanted the trust papers.
“I wanted to destroy them,” he said.
“Then why does Vale have them?” Anna asked.
Michael looked at Vale.
For the first time, real fear.
Vale had used him too.
Michael lowered the gun.
Vale raised his.
Federal agents breached the side door.
Everything became noise.
Lily dropped.
Michael tackled Vale.
A shot fired.
Michael fell.
Blood at his shoulder.
Luca reached Lily first.
“Are you hit?”
“No.”
“Hand?”
“Still burned.”
“That was not the question.”
“I know.”
Vale was arrested.
Anna crawled to Michael.
He looked at her.
“I’m sorry.”
She started crying.
“You always say that after the damage.”
Luca stood over his brother.
Michael whispered:
“The cake wasn’t Vanessa’s final plan.”
“What?”
“She already got your signature.”
Luca’s face hardened.
“On what?”
“The marriage license.”
Silence.
The wedding was still three days away.
Yet somewhere, a document already said Luca Moretti and Vanessa Bellini were legally married.
After the warehouse raid, Michael was taken to surgery.
The bullet had passed through soft tissue near his shoulder.
Painful.
Not fatal.
Anna sat in the hospital corridor with baby Elena sleeping against her chest.
Luca stood twenty feet away.
Neither approached the other.
Lily sat between them by accident.
Or maybe not.
Anna spoke first.
“He hates himself.”
Luca looked at her.
“That does not undo anything.”
“I know.”
“Then why say it?”
“Because you look like you need him to be simple.”
Luca’s face hardened.
Lily looked at Anna.
She continued.
“Michael did terrible things. He also stopped worse things.”
“Too late,” Luca said.
“Yes.”
“He forged records.”
“Yes.”
“He gave Vale my signature.”
“Yes.”
“He helped Vanessa build a plan to remove me.”
“Yes.”
Anna’s voice never softened.
“But he also spent six months trying to dismantle the same system after realizing what it would cost.”
Luca laughed bitterly.
“A conscience with terrible timing.”
“Yes.”
Silence.
Lily watched Luca absorb it.
Then Anna looked at Lily.
“The cake.”
“What?”
“Vale’s drug plan had one extra step.”
Lily’s stomach tightened.
“What step?”
“After Luca was admitted, a neurologist was supposed to evaluate him.”
“Why?”
“To establish incompetence.”
“Based on one episode?”
“Combined with the forged psychiatric history.”
Luca stared.
“And who was the neurologist?”
Anna looked at him.
“Dr. Evan Marks.”
Luca knew the name.
He served on the Moretti Memorial board.
Friend of Victor Bellini.
Respected.
Untouchable.
Until now.
Daniel began pulling records.
Dr. Marks had signed several evaluations tied to Bellini inheritance disputes.
Convenient incompetence.
Convenient guardianships.
Convenient transfers.
Lily felt sick.
“So the cake was not only poison.”
“No.”
Anna looked at Lily’s hand.
“Your injury was not random either.”
Lily frowned.
“Vanessa got angry.”
“Maybe. But Vale told her to keep you from handling the trust biometric system.”
“What system?”
Anna stopped.
Luca turned.
“You know?”
Anna’s face changed.
“I thought Lily knew.”
“Knew what?”
“Elena named a civilian trustee after Diane.”
Lily stared.
“My mother?”
Anna nodded.
“And after Diane?”
“Lily.”
That detail would surface later through Rebecca, but Anna already knew part of it.
Lily laughed.
“No.”
Luca looked at her.
“You are becoming repetitive.”
“I serve dinner.”
Anna smiled faintly.
“So did my mother once.”
Lily stared.
Maria had run a bakery.
Not service here.
Anna continued.
“Elena liked people who understood work more than status.”
Luca almost smiled.
“That sounds like her.”
Then Daniel returned.
“Dr. Marks is gone.”
“Where?”
“Private plane left Midway two hours ago.”
“Destination?”
“Toronto.”
Agent Walsh ordered a federal alert.
The conspiracy widened.
Not only family.
Doctors.
Lawyers.
Bank staff.
Corporate trustees.
People who could turn a lie into paperwork.
Lily finally understood why Anna had chosen video instead of a legal complaint.
Paper systems had been compromised.
A camera at least captured a face saying words.
Anna looked down at the baby.
“I want Elena out.”
Luca frowned.
“Out of what?”
“This.”
“Chicago?”
“The family structure.”
Luca’s expression softened.
“What does that mean?”
“No trusts in her name she cannot reject.”
“Agreed.”
“No board seat because of blood.”
“Agreed.”
“No security men teaching her to be afraid.”
Luca looked uncomfortable.
“Security may be necessary.”
Lily raised an eyebrow.
Anna smiled.
“Normal security.”
“Define normal.”
“Not your version.”
Luca sighed.
“Fine.”
Michael survived surgery.
When he woke, Luca entered alone.
Lily stayed outside.
She could not hear everything.
Only pieces.
“I’m sorry.”
“You said that.”
“I know.”
“Why did you do it?”
Long silence.
Then Michael:
“Because Dad trusted you with the future and trusted me with errands.”
Luca:
“So you wanted to destroy me.”
“No. I wanted you to need me.”
That answer silenced Luca.
Michael continued.
“I thought if you were weakened, I could become indispensable.”
“And Vanessa?”
“She understood resentment.”
“Because Victor trained her.”
“Yes.”
“So you two built a plan around it.”
“Yes.”
“Did you ever love me?”
Michael started crying.
Lily looked away.
Luca came out twenty minutes later.
His face unreadable.
“Ready?” Lily asked.
“For what?”
“Anything.”
He stared.
“That is a dangerous question.”
“Good thing you have security.”
He almost smiled.
Then said:
“Michael said something.”
“What?”
“He said Vale already filed the marriage license.”
Lily’s humor disappeared.
The next threat was not a plan.
It was already a record.
Before Lily left the hospital that night, Michael asked to see her alone.
She almost refused.
Then curiosity won.
He sat upright with difficulty, one arm in a sling.
“You think I’m a coward,” he said.
“I don’t know you well enough.”
“That is diplomatic.”
“No. It is accurate.”
He looked toward the door.
“Luca always thought fear was something to defeat.”
“And you?”
“I thought fear was information.”
“That sounds smarter.”
“It became an excuse.”
Lily said nothing.
Michael continued.
“I kept telling myself every compromise was temporary. One forged file. One payment. One lie to keep Vale close. Then I would fix it.”
“And?”
“Temporary became seven years.”
Lily looked at him.
“That is how people lose themselves.”
“Yes.”
“Why tell me?”
“Because Luca will want to believe I became someone else overnight.”
“You didn’t.”
“No.”
“And you want me to tell him.”
“No.”
Michael’s eyes filled.
“I want someone to remember that change works both directions. I became worse slowly. Maybe I can become better slowly too.”
Lily thought about Vanessa.
About herself.
About the word no.
“Then start with truth that costs you something.”
Michael nodded.
“It already has.”
“Good.”
When Lily left, she found Luca waiting.
“What did he say?”
She looked at him.
“That is his truth to tell you.”
Luca studied her.
Then nodded.
A month earlier, he might have demanded the answer.
Tonight, he accepted the boundary.

Real progress.
