Chapter 5 - VANESSA'S VERSION

Vanessa sat in Luca's study when we returned from the hospital.

No ring.

She had removed it herself.

It lay on the desk.

Luca stopped across from her.

"Sofia says you helped her escape."

Vanessa nodded.

"At the end."

"Why not tell me?"

She laughed softly.

"Because I am a coward."

No defense.

That surprised everyone.

Then she looked at me.

"And because Rachel had already said Sofia's name in front of thirty-four people."

"So?"

"Once the room heard it, Victor would hear it within an hour."

She was right.

Rich guests talk.

Drivers talk.

Staff talk.

Phones exist.

The secret was broken.

Vanessa had panicked.

She gave Sofia the passage key.

Told Adrian Bellini to loop the garage camera.

Ordered the Mercedes left where Sofia could take it.

Then why lie to Luca downstairs?

Because she still wanted the marriage.

There it was.

She hoped Sofia could escape without Luca learning the trust scheme.

She wanted both.

Protect Sofia.

Keep Luca.

Protect herself.

Contradictory.

Human.

Dangerous.

"Did you know about the marriage amendment?" Luca asked.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Yes."

"When?"

"Two months ago."

"And you said nothing."

"I was going to change it after the wedding."

Luca laughed bitterly.

"How?"

"Once I had voting authority, I planned to remove my father from Bellini Holdings."

Silence.

That was almost plausible.

Almost.

"You were going to use the trap to escape the man who built it," I said.

She looked at me.

"Yes."

"Without telling Luca."

"Yes."

"So he was a tool too."

She flinched.

"I loved him."

"That doesn't answer me."

She looked down.

"Yes."

Good.

Luca sat.

The anger left his face.

That was more frightening.

"Why did you bribe Teresa?" he asked.

Wait—Teresa belongs previous story, not this one. No. Need keep current. Instead ask why pianist? "Why did you try to stop the song?".

Luca asked:

"Why did you try to stop the song?"

"Because Sofia told me she would use it if she decided to tell you everything."

"You knew it was a signal."

"Yes."

"And Rachel stopped it first."

Vanessa looked at me.

"I thought she was working with Sofia."

"I wasn't."

"I know now."

Then Luca asked the question that mattered.

"Did you ever intend to hurt Sofia?"

Vanessa shook her head.

"No."

"Did you understand sedating and confining her was harm?"

Long silence.

"Eventually."

Not enough.

But honest.

Then Marco entered.

"Victor Bellini is in Chicago."

Vanessa closed her eyes.

"Where?"

"Bellini Foundation building."

Federal agents had placed it under surveillance.

Victor had entered through a private underground garage ninety minutes earlier.

No public record of him arriving in the country.

His private jet had filed from Montreal under a medical charity registration.

Vanessa whispered:

"He came for the trust."

Luca stood.

"Then we go to federal agents."

Vanessa looked surprised.

"Not to him?"

"No."

Good.

No family showdown first.

But Victor made the decision for us.

He called Luca directly.

Speaker.

"Anthony."

Luca's jaw tightened.

"Victor."

"Your aunt has caused trouble."

Sofia, at the hospital, was safe.

Victor did not know exactly where.

Good.

"What do you want?" Luca asked.

"The Harbor archive."

"No."

"Then I release Salvatore's ledger."

Luca almost laughed.

"We already have it."

Silence.

Victor recovered.

"Not the personal ledger."

Salvatore's face changed.

Luca noticed.

"What personal ledger?"

Victor laughed.

"Ask your father who Elena really left Moretti Holdings to."

Salvatore closed his eyes.

Another secret.

Victor continued.

"Tomorrow's trust amendment was not created by Bellini lawyers."

"It was created by Elena Moretti."

Luca went still.

"Why?"

"Because your mother never trusted Salvatore to leave you the company cleanly."

Salvatore whispered:

"He's telling the truth."

Vanessa looked at him.

"What?"

Salvatore explained.

Elena created a contingency trust before her death.

If Luca married into a family with documented Bellini ownership, a dormant twenty percent voting block would transfer into an independent marital trust.

Not to Vanessa.

To an outside trustee.

Who?

Sofia.

Everyone stared.

The marriage amendment Victor wanted signed would replace Sofia with Vanessa as trustee.

Fraudulently.

Anthony Vale drafted it.

So Victor did not merely want the wedding.

He wanted Sofia legally erased from the structure.

Again.

Luca looked at Vanessa.

"Did you know Sofia was the real trustee?"

She shook her head.

"No."

Salvatore believed her.

So did I.

That changed the shape again.

Vanessa knew she would gain power.

She did not know that power was being stolen directly from the woman she had locked upstairs.

Then Victor said:

"Bring Sofia to the Bellini building by midnight."

Luca laughed.

"No."

"Then Adrian will do what he should have done three months ago."

Vanessa stood.

"What did you do to Adrian?"

Victor ignored her.

Then a video arrived on Luca's phone.

Adrian Bellini.

Bound to a chair.

Bruised.

Alive.

Vanessa covered her mouth.

Her cousin.

The man who helped Sofia escape.

Victor continued:

"Family is expensive, Vanessa."

She whispered:

"You taught me that."

Then she hung up on him.

Not Luca.

Vanessa.

She ended her father's call.

For the first time, she chose a side without pretending there was no cost.

Then she looked at Luca.

"I know how to get into the Bellini building."

Marco said:

"Federal agents will handle entry."

"Good."

She looked at him.

May you like

"Because I'm done doing this privately."

That was the first thing she said all night that sounded like change instead of strategy.
