Chapter 7 - SALVATORE'S SECRET

Luca watched the video three times.

Not because he doubted Peter.

Because each viewing hurt differently.

The first time, he heard accusation.

The second time, detail.

The third time, silence between words.

Peter did not say Salvatore ordered the killings.

He said Salvatore knew where the bodies were going.

Still terrible.

Still complicity.

Still his father.

Emma sat beside Claire.

Her mother held Peter’s wedding ring in both hands.

Daniel stood by the door.

No one spoke until the video ended again.

Luca said, “We verify.”

Emma looked at him.

“You think Peter lied?”

“No.”

“Then what are you verifying?”

“Everything around the statement.”

“Why?”

“Because truth deserves more than belief when people can still be prosecuted.”

Emma studied him.

That was not denial.

Good.

Luca called Agent Walsh.

Federal investigators took a forensic copy of the drive.

Within hours, they confirmed the recording date.

Metadata.

Camera model.

No obvious alteration.

Then another file was found.

Audio only.

Peter and Salvatore.

The voices were clear.

Peter: “You know what Victor did.”

Salvatore: “I know enough.”

Peter: “Gabriel is meeting me tomorrow.”

Salvatore: “Then don’t go.”

Peter: “Why?”

Long silence.

Salvatore: “Because Victor has Caleb watching him.”

Peter: “Then help us.”

Salvatore: “I can’t.”

Peter: “You mean you won’t.”

Salvatore: “If I move openly, Luca becomes leverage.”

Peter: “So you’re sacrificing Gabriel.”

Salvatore: “I am trying to keep both my sons alive.”

The recording ended.

Emma stared.

Luca’s hands were flat on the table.

His father had known.

He had been afraid.

And fear had become inaction.

The result had been two dead men under concrete.

Emma said quietly, “Your father did the same thing everyone else did.”

Luca looked at her.

“Called silence protection.”

“Yes.”

He leaned back.

“I spent years thinking he was fearless.”

“No one is.”

“My family built an industry out of pretending.”

Claire whispered, “Peter hated Salvatore for that.”

“He had reason.”

Luca looked toward the window.

“Did my father know where Gabriel was buried?”

Agent Walsh answered.

“We don’t know.”

Peter’s video suggested yes.

Vanessa claimed Salvatore arrived at the hotel after the burial.

Too late to stop Caleb.

But he knew.

He did not call police.

He arranged hush money for staff.

He helped close the basement.

Why?

Victor had photographs showing Gabriel with illegal financial documents stolen from Bellini offices.

Salvatore feared Gabriel would be framed for extortion and organized crime.

So he protected the Moretti name.

Again.

By burying truth.

Emma found Luca in the mansion garden after sunset.

Bruno slept on a blanket near the bench.

Old dog home.

Safe.

The first normal thing in days.

Emma sat.

“How is he?”

“Better.”

“Dr. Patel says he’ll be sore.”

“He’s fourteen. He’s always sore.”

Bruno opened one eye as if offended.

Emma smiled.

Then silence.

Luca said, “You don’t have to stay here.”

“I know.”

“Your room is available.”

“I know.”

“Your job too.”

She looked at him.

“Do I still have one?”

“Yes.”

“I told federal agents your father helped cover up a murder.”

“That is not grounds for termination.”

“Generous.”

“Also illegal, probably.”

Emma looked toward the house.

“What happens to Vanessa?”

“Charges.”

“For Bruno?”

“Forgery. identity misuse. coercion. possibly conspiracy depending on the federal case.”

“And us?”

Luca frowned.

“Us?”

“Family.”

He looked at her.

“Right.”

The word sounded strange.

Emma rubbed her hands together.

“I don’t know how to do this.”

“Neither do I.”

“You’re my uncle.”

“Biologically.”

“You’re eleven years older.”

“You mentioned.”

“You were technically my boss before you were my uncle.”

“Still am if you keep the job.”

“That feels inappropriate.”

“Then quit.”

She looked offended.

“You could sound sad.”

“I would be.”

That surprised her.

Luca continued.

“But I’m trying not to use my feelings to decide for you.”

She stared.

“Who trained you?”

“Trauma.”

She laughed.

Bruno’s tail moved.

Then Emma became serious.

“Did Gabriel know you?”

“Of course.”

“No. I mean after he disappeared.”

Luca looked down.

“Apparently.”

“Did he watch you?”

“Enzo says Gabriel followed news about me.”

“Did he ever try to contact you?”

“One letter.”

Emma turned.

“You found it?”

“No.”

“Vanessa burned it.”

“Maybe.”

“You don’t believe her.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because people who burn evidence usually remember what was in it.”

Emma thought.

“Unless she kept it.”

Luca looked at her.

They both had the same thought.

Vanessa.

Hospital.

Her belongings had been inventoried after the shooting.

Daniel brought the property log.

Phone.

Jewelry.

Wallet.

Engagement ring.

A small red leather notebook.

No letter.

But the phone contained photographs.

Deleted.

Recovered by federal technicians.

One image showed Gabriel’s letter.

Vanessa had photographed it before burning it.

Luca read.

Little brother,

If this reaches you, then Mom finally chose truth over fear.

I failed you.

I spent years believing distance kept you safe.

It didn’t.

Victor knows about Claire’s daughter.

If anything happens to Peter, protect Emma Collins.

She is mine.

Emma covered her mouth.

Gabriel continued.

I don’t deserve to call myself her father.

Peter does.

But she is Moretti blood, and that means men will someday try to tell her what she owes them.

She owes us nothing.

Luca looked at Emma.

The letter continued.

If she ever comes into your life, do not make the mistake Dad made with us.

Don’t protect her by deciding for her.

Tell her everything.

Then stand beside whatever she chooses.

Emma’s eyes filled.

“Your brother wrote that?”

“Yes.”

“Before he died?”

“Likely.”

“Vanessa knew.”

“Yes.”

“She knew who I was before I started working here?”

The date of the photographed letter was seven months before Emma’s employment.

Luca checked staff application records.

Emma had applied through an online listing.

But who approved her?

Mrs. Carter recommended her.

Who added her résumé to the final interview list?

Vanessa.

Emma stared.

“She hired me?”

“Indirectly.”

“Why?”

Luca’s face hardened.

“To keep you close.”

“For the trust?”

“Probably.”

“Or to watch whether I knew anything.”

“Yes.”

Emma laughed bitterly.

“My entire employment was surveillance.”

“Your work was real.”

“That is not the point.”

“I know.”

She stood.

“I need air.”

“You are outside.”

“More air.”

She walked.

Luca did not follow.

He wanted to.

He didn’t.

Ten minutes later, Emma returned.

“That was annoyingly respectful.”

“I’m practicing.”

“Stop being good at it.”

“No.”

She sat again.

“What does the trust actually mean?”

“Control of investment assets.”

“How much?”

“Agent Walsh is still tracing.”

“Claire said three hundred million.”

“Could be more.”

Emma looked sick.

“I don’t want to be rich because two fathers died.”

“You wouldn’t be.”

“Feels like it.”

“Then do something else with it.”

“Like?”

“Your mother’s medical care.”

“That is one bill.”

“Housing fund.”

She looked at him.

“For staff?”

“For anyone.”

“Worker safety.”

“Yes.”

“Animal rescue.”

Bruno raised his head.

Emma smiled.

“Bruno votes yes.”

Luca looked at the old dog.

“He is biased.”

Emma became quiet.

Then said, “Maybe I don’t reject it.”

“Okay.”

“Maybe I use it.”

“Okay.”

“You’re not going to tell me what to do?”

“No.”

“That is deeply irritating.”

“I’m learning your preferences.”

Before she could answer, Daniel approached from the house.

“Boss.”

Luca stood.

“What?”

“Caleb Shaw was found.”

Emma’s chest tightened.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“Airport motel.”

“Arrested?”

“No.”

Daniel’s face was grim.

“He was murdered.”

Silence.

“How?”

“Single gunshot.”

“Who found him?”

“Housekeeping.”

Luca’s expression hardened.

Emma whispered, “Victor?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Victor is still in intensive care.”

“Then who?”

Daniel held up a clear evidence photo.

On the motel desk beside Caleb’s body was a note.

One sentence.

HE KNEW WHAT VANESSA DID TO GABRIEL.

Emma looked toward the house.

Vanessa was under federal protection.

Luca’s face changed.

“You think she had him killed?”

Daniel said, “There’s more.”

“What?”

“Caleb had a hotel keycard in his pocket.”

“Which hotel?”

“Not Lake Geneva.”

Daniel looked at Emma.

“The Palmer House.”

Chicago.

Emma frowned.

“When?”

“Used yesterday afternoon.”

“Before the engagement dinner?”

“Yes.”

Luca went still.

“Room?”

Daniel answered.

“824.”

Emma’s stomach tightened.

Vanessa’s brother Matteo had stayed in 824 the night before the engagement dinner.

Luca looked toward the driveway.

“Where is Matteo?”

Daniel swallowed.

“No one knows.”

Emma stayed in the garden after Daniel left.

Luca did too.

For several minutes, neither mentioned Caleb Shaw.

Bruno slept between them, his breathing slow and uneven.

Emma watched the rise and fall of his ribs.

“Do you ever wonder what would have happened if I had turned around at dinner?” she asked.

Luca looked at her. “What?”

“If I had just served normally. Let everyone see the torn dress.”

“Vanessa still would have lied.”

“Yes.”

“But I might have asked sooner.”

Emma nodded.

“So all of this happened because I was trying to hide what she did.”

“No.”

Luca's answer was immediate.

She looked at him.

“All of this happened because people before you built systems that depended on everyone staying quiet.”

Emma considered that.

“My silence helped.”

“For four hours.”

“Still.”

“Then you told the truth.”

“After you promised my job.”

“Yes.”

She smiled faintly. “Bribery.”

“Employment reassurance.”

“That sounds like something an attorney taught you.”

“I dislike attorneys this week.”

Emma laughed softly.

Then she became serious. “If Caleb is dead, Matteo may be in danger.”

“Yes.”

“And Vanessa might still be lying.”

“Yes.”

“And we haven't even figured out who killed Peter.”

“Yes.”

She sighed. “Your answers are very repetitive.”

“Your family is now my family. Repetition may be safer than prediction.”

Emma looked at him.

The word family no longer sounded like a trap when he said it.

Maybe because he was not using it to claim her.

Only to acknowledge connection.

Bruno opened one eye and nudged Emma's shoe.

May you like

She bent to scratch his head.

“Come on, old man,” she whispered. “Apparently we still have work to do.”
