Chapter 7 - THE ENGAGEMENT TRAP

The forged termination letter frightened me more than the threats.

Threats could be denied later.

A letter on Moretti estate stationery, with Luca's signature copied at the bottom, could become a story other people believed.

Claire Bennett stole from her employer.

Claire Bennett was fired.

Claire Bennett was bitter afterward.

Everything I said about Vanessa could be turned into revenge.

I stared at the document on Daniel's laptop until the words blurred.

"She was preparing my credibility before I even knew I needed it."

Elena Ward, who had driven to the hotel after Daniel called, nodded grimly.

"That's exactly what this is."

Luca stood beside the window with both hands in his pockets.

"Can we prove the signature is forged?"

"Easily," Elena said. "But Vanessa wasn't building a case for court. She was building a story for staff, family, maybe reporters. Stories move faster than forensic handwriting reports."

Caroline sat on the edge of the hotel bed, looking smaller every minute.

"That's what she did to me," she whispered. "By the time I left, everyone already believed I had stolen from her. I never even got the chance to defend myself."

I looked at her.

For the first time, I understood why she had helped Vanessa after leaving.

Fear was not always loud.

Sometimes it was paperwork.

Sometimes it was a rumor placed carefully enough that a person began living inside it.

Luca turned from the window.

"Then we don't let her write the ending."

Elena closed the laptop.

"We have enough now to involve law enforcement formally. Illegal surveillance, forged documents, threats, potentially attempted fraud. But if we move this second, Vanessa's uncle is already gone, and we don't know whether there are other participants."

"How long?" Luca asked.

"Hours, not days. I have a contact in the financial crimes unit reviewing what Daniel recovered. They'll want clean evidence and chain of custody."

Daniel nodded. "The backup drive gives us that."

"Good. Then nobody gets creative."

Elena looked directly at Luca when she said it.

He gave her a cold stare.

"You brought me in because you wanted this handled legally," she reminded him.

"I brought you in because I wanted it handled correctly."

"Tonight, those are the same thing."

I had no idea what Luca would have done in another version of his life.

I was suddenly grateful I did not need to find out.

We returned to the estate shortly before six.

Vanessa was having her hair styled for the rehearsal dinner.

The house had changed clothes while we were gone.

Candles lined the staircase. White flowers filled the entry hall. The dining room glittered with crystal and silver. A string quartet warmed up in the music room.

It was beautiful.

It was also evidence.

Everything felt staged now.

Every smile could conceal instruction.

Every decorative object could contain a microphone.

Mrs. Carter met me near the service elevator.

"You should be resting."

"I am resting between disasters."

She almost smiled.

Then she saw the forged termination letter in my hand.

Her expression changed.

"Where did you get that?"

"Vanessa's backup files."

Mrs. Carter read the page once.

Then she tore it cleanly in half.

I stared at her.

"Elena needs that."

Mrs. Carter froze.

"There are copies," I said quickly.

She tore it again.

"Good."

I laughed before I could stop myself.

Mrs. Carter handed me the pieces.

"I have supervised this house for thirty-one years. If anyone believes I would allow you to be dismissed for theft without a documented investigation, they have learned nothing about me."

My eyes burned.

"Thank you."

"Don't cry. Your mascara is already questionable."

There she was.

By seven, the plan was in place.

Luca told Vanessa that Damian would return at nine-thirty with a corrected signing packet.

He told her Elena Ward had been consulted only to verify one clause and had left satisfied.

He told her Daniel's sweep found "one defective electronic component" in the mirror but nothing suspicious.

Every statement was designed to make her believe the danger had passed.

Then he put one more piece of information where he knew she would hear it.

In the study, with the cloned recorder active, Luca told Daniel he intended to move his current trust documents to a private vault after the rehearsal dinner.

There was no vault.

There were no documents in the study.

But within nineteen minutes, someone tried to access the estate's service entrance using a deactivated contractor badge.

Daniel's men detained him outside.

The man claimed he was a locksmith sent to repair Luca's safe.

Vanessa denied calling him.

The locksmith showed a text message with instructions.

The number belonged to a prepaid phone purchased two blocks from Damian Hart's office.

Damian denied sending it.

Elena smiled without humor.

"Good. Everybody's lying. That usually means we're getting close."

At eight-forty, the rehearsal dinner began.

I was not working.

Luca had made that nonnegotiable.

Mrs. Carter found me a simple navy dress from the emergency wardrobe used when staff uniforms were damaged during formal events. I sat in the smaller family parlor with Caroline and two security officers while the guests arrived.

Then Maribel rushed in.

"Claire."

Her face was pale.

"What happened?"

"Vanessa's diamond bracelet is missing."

I did not need the rest.

I knew before she said it.

"They're searching staff lockers."

My stomach dropped.

The termination letter.

The prepared story.

Daniel appeared behind Maribel.

"Nobody touches Claire's locker."

"Too late," Maribel whispered.

We went downstairs.

Half the staff had gathered in the service corridor.

Vanessa stood near the lockers with one hand pressed dramatically to her chest.

In the palm of her other hand lay a diamond bracelet.

She looked at me as I approached.

"Claire."

Her voice was sad.

Perfectly sad.

"I didn't want to believe it."

The bracelet had been found inside my locker, tucked beneath my folded winter scarf.

Several staff members looked away.

The rumor had just become evidence.

Vanessa turned to Luca, who had followed Daniel into the corridor.

"I'm sorry. I know you tried to help her."

Luca looked at the bracelet.

Then at me.

I made myself hold his gaze.

"I didn't take it."

"I know."

Vanessa blinked.

Luca turned toward Daniel.

"Show her."

Daniel took out his phone.

A security video filled the screen.

Time stamp: 7:18 p.m.

Vanessa's personal stylist entered the service corridor carrying a garment bag.

She checked both directions.

Then opened my locker with a key.

She placed something beneath my scarf.

The video ended.

Vanessa's face emptied.

"I have no idea why she would do that."

Daniel said, "She says you told her Claire stole from you before. She thought she was helping prove it."

That was not enough for criminal proof.

But it was enough for the room.

The staff looked at Vanessa differently now.

The story she had built for me collapsed in less than thirty seconds.

Luca held out his hand.

Vanessa placed the bracelet into it.

"This is humiliating," she whispered.

"Yes," he said. "It is."

She searched his face.

"You're choosing a maid over me?"

The corridor went completely silent.

Luca's voice stayed quiet.

"I'm choosing evidence over a lie."

Vanessa's eyes flicked toward me.

For one second, I saw hatred without polish.

Then she smiled.

"Fine. If you want your staff drama tonight, enjoy it. I'm going upstairs."

Luca did not stop her.

That surprised everyone except Daniel.

We watched her leave.

Three minutes later, Daniel's earpiece sounded.

He listened.

"She's in her room," he said. "Door closed."

Luca nodded.

"Keep eyes on every exit."

I looked at him.

"You expected that?"

"I expected something."

His gaze moved to the ceiling.

"She's losing control. People make mistakes when control disappears."

At nine-seventeen, Vanessa made hers.

She used the cloned recorder's connection.

Daniel captured the call live.

Her voice came through the laptop in Luca's study.

"Tonight," she whispered. "We're done waiting until after the wedding. He signs at nine-thirty. Use the medical file as soon as it's complete."

A man's voice answered.

Not Damian.

Not anyone we recognized.

"And the girl?"

Vanessa paused.

"She doesn't matter anymore."

My stomach tightened.

Then she added,

"But her mother does."

Luca's hand closed around the back of a chair.

Daniel traced the call.

The signal did not go to an office.

It went to a car parked two streets from the estate.

Security moved.

The car sped away before they reached it.

But Daniel got the plate.

It was registered to Northlake Fiduciary.

Before the bell sounded, Luca turned the cloned recorder over in his hand.

"If she has moved the timetable forward, then every person connected to this plan is going to expect something from this house tonight," he said.

Daniel nodded. "Which means we control what leaves it."

I looked toward the hallway where the rehearsal guests were still talking over dessert. None of them knew security had quietly closed the gates. None of them knew Elena had already copied the altered documents or that police investigators were waiting for one final piece before moving.

The normality of the party suddenly seemed unreal. Champagne. Flowers. Music. Twenty feet away, a conspiracy was collapsing one secret at a time.

Luca caught me watching the door.

"Regretting not going home?"

"Ask me after midnight."

"Fair."

Then the bell sounded.

At nine-twenty-five, the front doorbell rang.

Damian Hart had arrived for the signing.

He was five minutes early.

May you like

And he was not alone.

Standing beside him was Dr. Anthony Bellini.
