CHAPTER 5: Garrett’s Calm Began to Break

Garrett had always been calm.

That was one of the reasons Emily had trusted him in the beginning. He was a man who moved slowly, spoke softly, and never seemed shaken by anything. In crisis, he became smoother, quieter, almost comforting. When Emily cried during pregnancy, he told her she was safe. When Naomi criticized her, he explained that his mother was old-fashioned. When Emily felt watched inside her own home, Garrett kissed her forehead and said stress could make shadows look like threats.

Now his calm was falling apart under fluorescent lights.

Sweat had gathered across his forehead. His breathing had become uneven. His eyes kept moving between Emily, the baby, Quincy, the notebook, and the hospital staff forming a wider circle around them.

He looked trapped.

Naomi still stood with her Bible, but even she had stopped trying to command the room. Her lips moved silently, perhaps in prayer, perhaps in calculation. She avoided looking at Violet.

Emily noticed that most of all.

A nurse brought a neonatal warmer toward them, and the doctor carefully guided Emily closer without taking Violet from her arms. He checked the baby’s breathing while she remained against Emily’s chest. Violet’s tiny hand moved again, faint but real.

“She has a pulse,” the doctor said.

The words nearly broke Emily.

A sob rose in her throat, but it did not fully escape. She pressed her lips to Violet’s blanket and whispered, “I knew it. I knew you were here.”

Garrett looked away.

The doctor’s face hardened.

“Who pronounced this child dead?”

Garrett swallowed.

Naomi answered too quickly. “There was confusion. Birth can be chaotic.”

The doctor ignored her and looked at Garrett. “You’re in scrubs. Are you medical staff here?”

Garrett shook his head. “I work in hospital administration. I was helping coordinate—”

“Coordinate what?”

Garrett’s mouth tightened.

Quincy turned another page in the notebook.

“Dad said paperwork was easier if no one questioned the first report.”

The doctor stared.

A nurse whispered, “Oh my God.”

Emily’s knees nearly gave out, but she forced herself to stay standing. She could not collapse. Not while Violet needed her warmth. Not while Quincy was standing alone with the truth. Not while Garrett still had the chance to twist the story.

Garrett turned sharply toward Quincy. “You don’t understand adult conversations.”

Quincy flinched, but he did not close the notebook.

“You said the baby would ruin everything,” he said.

Garrett’s face changed.

It was small, but everyone saw it.

The mask slipped.

For one second, fear became anger.

Then he tried to cover it with sadness.

“Son,” he said carefully, “you are scared. You heard things wrong. I was worried about your stepmother. About the baby. About all of us.”

Quincy looked at Emily.

Then at Violet.

Then back at Garrett.

“No,” he said. “You were worried she was a girl.”

The words landed like a stone dropped through glass.

Naomi inhaled sharply.

Emily stared at Garrett, remembering months of comments she had tried to ignore. Naomi talking about family bloodlines. Garrett saying his inheritance situation was complicated. His strange disappointment when the ultrasound confirmed a girl. His sudden insistence that Naomi be present for the birth.

A horrifying picture began forming.

Not complete yet.

But enough to make her skin go cold.

Garrett stepped backward.

The staff stepped forward.

His calm was gone now.

And everyone could see it.
