CHAPTER 9: Emily Chose Her Children

The neonatal team confirmed that Violet was weak but alive.

Those words became the only thing Emily could hold without shaking apart.

Weak, but alive.

Every other truth was too heavy to carry all at once. Garrett’s betrayal. Naomi’s cruelty. The altered records. The service corridor. The lies. The way Emily had been expected to mourn quietly while her daughter disappeared. If she let the full horror enter her body, she feared she might collapse, and she could not collapse yet.

Violet needed her.

Quincy needed her too.

The boy sat beside the hospital bed, quiet and rigid, as if waiting for someone to scold him for telling the truth. His notebook had exposed his father and grandmother, but he did not look proud. He looked frightened by the size of what he had done.

Emily reached for him.

“Come here.”

Quincy hesitated.

Then he stepped close.

Emily pulled him gently into one arm while Violet remained against her chest. It was awkward, careful, fragile. But for the first time that night, both children were close enough for her to feel their warmth.

“You did the right thing,” she told him.

Quincy’s eyes filled. “Dad will hate me.”

Emily looked toward Garrett.

He stood farther away now, speaking with security and the compliance officer, his face pale, his hands unsteady. Naomi sat in a chair near the wall, Bible in her lap, eyes empty and furious.

Emily looked back at Quincy.

“Then he is wrong.”

The boy blinked.

Emily’s voice strengthened. “You protected your sister.”

Quincy’s lips trembled.

“Sister,” he whispered, as if the word had finally made Violet real.

“Yes,” Emily said. “Your sister.”

He looked down at the baby. Violet’s tiny fingers moved faintly under the blanket.

Quincy gave the smallest smile through tears.

The doctor returned, his expression gentler now. “We need to move her to the NICU soon. You can come with us.”

Emily nodded immediately. “I’m not leaving her.”

“No one is asking you to.”

Those words nearly undid her.

All day, people had asked her to let go. Let go of the baby. Let go of questions. Let go of instinct. Let go of truth.

Now someone finally said she could stay.

Garrett called her name from across the room. “Emily.”

She did not answer.

He tried again. “Please. We need to talk.”

Emily looked at him, and something inside her settled.

For months, she had wanted Garrett to explain his coldness, his distance, his loyalty to Naomi. Now she understood that explanations could become traps. He would wrap the truth in fear, inheritance, pressure, confusion, grief, stress—anything except responsibility.

She turned away.

The action was small.

But it ended the marriage more clearly than words.

Naomi suddenly spoke, voice low and bitter. “You will destroy this family.”

Emily looked at her.

“No,” she said. “You tried to. I’m saving what’s left.”

She placed one hand over Violet’s blanket and the other over Quincy’s shoulder.

Her family was smaller now.

But it was real.
