Your Father Is Alive

Chapter 01 - Your Father Is Alive
Julian Cross entered the bedroom believing his wife had stolen from him.
The afternoon light was gray behind the curtains. A half-packed suitcase sat near the bed. On the blanket lay Emma’s phone, a black folder, and a bank statement showing that two hundred and fifty thousand dollars had vanished from their private account.
Julian had come upstairs without putting on a shirt after leaving the home gym. Anger moved faster than thought. His jaw tightened. His hands curled at his sides.
Emma sat on the edge of the bed in a white tank top, long brown hair falling around a face swollen from crying.
“You transferred the money,” Julian said.
She nodded.
“You packed a suitcase.”
Another nod.
His voice rose. “Were you planning to disappear before I found out?”
Emma looked at him as if the accusation hurt less than what she had been carrying alone.
“I was trying to get him out.”
“Who?”
She reached for the phone, but Julian stepped closer.
For six months, strange things had entered their marriage. Emma left the house without explanation. She took calls in the garage. She returned smelling faintly of hospital disinfectant and refused to say where she had been. Three days earlier, Julian’s mother delivered photographs showing Emma meeting an older man at a private neurological clinic.
Victoria Cross called it an affair.
Julian tried not to believe her.
Then the money disappeared.
“Tell me his name,” he demanded.
Emma’s hands trembled so badly she almost dropped the phone.
“Thomas Reed.”
Julian stared.
“That means nothing to me.”
“It isn’t his real name.”
She unlocked the phone and showed him a photograph. An elderly man sat beside a clinic window, thinner than memory, gray-haired, a scar along one temple. His left hand rested on a cane. On his finger was a heavy silver ring engraved with a compass.
Julian stopped breathing.
His father wore that ring every day until the crash that supposedly killed him fifteen years earlier.
“No,” Julian whispered.
Emma looked up through tears.
“I wasn’t leaving you.”
She pressed the phone into his hand.
“I was trying to keep your father alive.”
Julian’s anger collapsed.
He pulled Emma against his chest, one hand cradling the back of her head while she finally allowed herself to sob.
Then the phone vibrated between them.

A message appeared from the clinic.
They are moving him tonight.
