Victoria At The Breakfast Table

Chapter 07 - Victoria At The Breakfast Table
Victoria Cross was drinking coffee when Julian entered her apartment.
She lived on the top floor of a limestone building overlooking the lake. Everything inside was cream, quiet, and arranged so perfectly that grief appeared decorative.
Julian had federal investigators waiting downstairs, but he asked for ten minutes before they entered.
Emma remained beside him.
Victoria looked at her with open hatred.
“So the little curator finally showed you her patient.”
Julian sat across from his mother.
“You knew from the beginning.”
Victoria lifted the cup.
“Knew what?”
“That Dad survived.”
A slight tremor moved through the porcelain.
Then she stopped pretending.
“Yes.”
Emma’s breath caught despite already knowing.
Victoria explained with the calm of someone who had rehearsed justification for years. Thomas survived the crash with severe injuries. Richard found him before police reached the vehicle. Thomas accused both of sabotaging the company and threatened to remove them from the trust.
“He was confused,” Victoria said.
“He knew enough to frighten you.”
“He would have destroyed everything.”
Julian looked around at the apartment purchased after Thomas’s funeral.
“You mean everything you wanted.”
Victoria set down the cup.
She said Richard caused the brake failure without her knowledge. Afterward, she faced an impossible choice: expose him and collapse the company, or hide Thomas until his memory became manageable.
“Manageable?” Emma said. “You told him his children were dead.”
Victoria’s eyes moved to her.
“I protected Julian from a father who would have dragged him into war.”
Julian stood.
“You made me give a eulogy while he was alive.”
For the first time, Victoria’s composure broke.
“I lost him too.”
“No. You visited him.”
The clinic records showed annual private appointments under an alias. Victoria monitored Thomas’s memory, medication, and ability to recognize signatures.
She had watched him age in confinement.
Then returned home to host memorial dinners.
Julian asked one final question.
“Did you threaten Emma’s life?”
Victoria did not answer.
Emma played the audio recording.
Tell Julian, and I will bury him beside his father.
Victoria closed her eyes.
The apartment door opened.
Investigators entered with a warrant.
As they escorted her away, she looked at Julian.
“I did everything for this family.”
Julian stepped beside Emma.
“No. You did everything to own it.”
The untouched coffee remained on the table.
May you like
Still warm.
Like the life Victoria had left behind each time she walked out of Room 309.
