Chapter 4 - THE BOX THEY WANTED

Adrian read the message three times.

BRING THE BOX. COME ALONE.

Below it was a location pin.

An abandoned veterinary clinic twenty miles outside the city.

Officer Ruiz held out his hand.

"Give me the phone."

Adrian didn't.

"They have Erin."

"Which is why you are not going alone."

"They'll see police."

"Then they see police."

Adrian looked back at Claire's box.

The flash drive.

The notebook.

The sealed envelope labeled IF MILES WINS.

Whoever had Erin wanted all of it.

That meant it mattered.

"We make a copy," Adrian said.

Ruiz frowned.

"Of what?"

"Everything we can."

Within thirty minutes, the bank manager copied the documents, photographed each notebook page, and cloned the flash drive under police supervision. The originals went into an evidence bag.

Adrian carried the empty bank box.

Ruiz stared at him.

"You think they're going to open it before they release her?"

"Probably."

"Then what?"

Adrian looked at the sealed envelope.

"We give them something else to find."

He opened IF MILES WINS.

Inside was a single page.

Not a letter.

A list.

Six dates.

Six wire transfers.

Six companies Adrian had never heard of.

At the bottom, Claire had written:

All roads lead to Northstar Holdings. Miles says Northstar belongs to a client. It belongs to him. Vanessa signs as V. Hale.

Ruiz looked over Adrian's shoulder.

"Hale?"

"Vanessa's last name is Hart."

"Maybe not legally."

Adrian photographed the page and returned it to the evidence bag.

Then he placed blank folders into the box and added a cheap flash drive.

"Now it looks right."

Ruiz shook his head.

"I hate this plan."

"So do I."

They compromised.

Adrian would drive alone.

Police would follow several minutes behind using unmarked vehicles and a tracker hidden in the box. Marcus would position two men near the clinic before Adrian arrived.

Adrian called Rosa before leaving.

"Do not take the children outside."

"I won't."

"Keep Lily away from windows."

"Mr. Cole, they are safe."

He closed his eyes.

Safe had become a word he no longer trusted.

"Tell her I'll be home soon."

Lily's voice came faintly over the phone.

"Daddy?"

He swallowed.

"I'm here, sweetheart."

"Did you find Mommy's box?"

Adrian looked at Ruiz.

"Yes."

"Was I brave?"

His eyes burned.

"Braver than Daddy."

Lily giggled once.

Then her voice became serious.

"Don't let Vanessa lock you up."

"I won't."

He hoped it wasn't a lie.

The clinic had closed nine years earlier. Its sign hung crooked above a cracked parking lot. Weeds grew through the pavement. One window was boarded over.

Adrian parked and stepped out carrying Claire's box.

No other cars.

"Erin?"

Nothing.

He entered.

The smell hit first.

Dust. Mold. Old disinfectant.

A fluorescent light flickered at the end of the corridor.

"Put the box down."

Vanessa's voice.

Adrian turned.

She stepped from a doorway holding a handgun.

Her hair was tied back. Her expensive dress was gone. She wore jeans, sneakers, and a black jacket.

She looked younger without makeup.

More dangerous too.

"Where's Erin?"

"Box."

"Let me see her."

Vanessa raised the weapon.

"Adrian."

He set the box on the floor.

"Now Erin."

A sound came from a room behind her.

A muffled cry.

Vanessa opened the door.

Erin sat tied to a metal chair.

Her lip was split, but she was conscious.

"I'm sorry," Erin whispered.

Adrian stared at Vanessa.

"Untie her."

"Not until I know you brought everything."

"You already lost. Police have copies."

Vanessa smiled.

"You always were a bad liar."

She nudged the box with her shoe.

"Open it."

Adrian crouched.

As he lifted the lid, Vanessa's eyes moved toward the folders.

That was enough.

Erin kicked the metal tray beside her.

It crashed against the wall.

Vanessa flinched.

Adrian lunged.

The gun fired.

Plaster exploded beside his head.

He grabbed Vanessa's wrist and slammed it against the cabinet.

She screamed.

The gun fell.

Adrian kicked it away.

Vanessa scratched his face and drove a knee into his stomach.

He doubled over.

She ran.

Erin shouted, "Don't let her leave!"

Adrian chased Vanessa through the corridor.

She burst through the rear door.

Outside, two unmarked police vehicles appeared at the end of the road.

Vanessa stopped.

For one second, she looked trapped.

Then a black SUV tore from behind the building.

Its passenger door opened before it stopped.

Vanessa jumped inside.

Adrian saw the driver.

Miles Grant.

Their eyes met through the windshield.

Miles looked calm.

Almost apologetic.

Then he hit the accelerator.

The SUV smashed through a rotten wooden fence and disappeared down a service road before police reached the lot.

Officer Ruiz ran past Adrian.

"You okay?"

"Erin's inside."

Ruiz sent two officers in and called the fleeing vehicle over the radio.

Adrian stood in the rain, breathing hard.

Miles had been there.

No more uncertainty.

No more excuses.

The man who had drafted his will, held Noah at the hospital, organized Claire's funeral, and sat beside Adrian through probate was working with Vanessa.

Erin emerged ten minutes later wrapped in a blanket.

Adrian went to her.

"I'm sorry."

She shook her head.

"You didn't do this."

"I should have known."

"Claire didn't know for a long time either."

Adrian looked at her.

"Tell me what she hired you to do."

Erin glanced toward the ambulance.

"Watch Vanessa."

"Vanessa wasn't in my life then."

"She was in Claire's."

Adrian waited.

"They met through the Children's Health Foundation," Erin said. "Vanessa volunteered at events. She got close to Claire."

"Why?"

"Miles told her to."

"Why?"

"Because Claire controlled thirty-eight percent of Cole Industries."

Adrian knew that.

Claire's shares had come through her father's estate.

"Her shares went into trust for Lily and Noah."

"Exactly."

Erin lowered her voice.

"Miles wrote the trust."

Adrian felt a chill.

"Claire changed it before she died."

"Yes. Without telling him."

"To what?"

"I don't know. But she said the change ruined his plan."

Ruiz approached carrying the fake box.

"No tracker signal."

Adrian frowned.

"They didn't take it."

"Which means the box wasn't the real reason for this meeting."

Erin's face changed.

"They wanted me."

Ruiz looked at her.

"Why?"

"Because I have something Claire gave me."

Adrian stared.

"What?"

Erin reached beneath the collar of her shirt.

A thin chain hung around her neck.

On it was a microSD card sealed inside a tiny metal pendant.

"Claire gave me this two days before she died. She said if anything happened, I should never give it to Miles."

Adrian's heart accelerated.

"What's on it?"

"I don't know."

"You never opened it?"

"I was scared."

Officer Ruiz held out an evidence bag.

Erin hesitated, then placed the pendant inside.

"Claire said one more thing."

Adrian looked at her.

"What?"

"She said the worst thing Miles ever did wasn't stealing money."

"Then what was it?"

Erin's eyes filled.

"She said he had already tried to take one of your children before Noah was even born."

Adrian stopped breathing.

"What does that mean?"

Erin shook her head.

"I don't know."

But Lily did.

When Adrian returned home that evening, Lily was waiting at the top of the staircase.

She ran into his arms.

He held her until she stopped shaking.

Then she whispered into his ear.

"Daddy, I remembered the basement lady."

Adrian pulled back.

"What basement lady?"

Lily looked toward the closed door beneath the stairs.

The door to a storage basement Adrian rarely used.

"The lady Vanessa said I wasn't supposed to see."

While paramedics checked Erin, Ruiz asked what happened after the attacker entered her hotel room. Erin wrapped both hands around a paper cup because she could not stop trembling.

"He wore a hotel jacket," she said. "I thought Adrian had sent someone until he asked where Claire's copy was."

"What copy?" Ruiz asked.

"I told him I didn't know."

"Then?"

"He searched everything. When he couldn't find it, he called Vanessa."

Adrian leaned closer.

"You heard her?"

"Yes. She told him not to hurt me."

That surprised him.

Erin gave a bitter laugh.

"Don't look relieved. She still came to the clinic and pointed a gun at you."

"I'm not relieved."

"Good."

She took a breath.

"Vanessa sounded scared of whoever the man was reporting to. He kept saying, 'Grant wants the card.' That's when I knew Miles was involved."

Ruiz asked, "Why didn't the attacker take the card from you at the hotel?"

Erin touched the pendant at her throat.

"Because Claire had it made to look cheap. The chain came from a drugstore. The pendant looked like a little saint medallion. He searched my bag and pockets, but he never asked me to remove jewelry."

Adrian stared at the tiny object.

Claire had anticipated searches, lies, missing evidence, even the possibility that Erin might be watched.

He felt pride and grief at the same time.

"Why didn't she tell me any of this?"

Erin's expression softened.

"Because she knew you. She said if she showed you half the evidence, you'd confront Miles with half a case."

Adrian almost smiled despite everything.

"She was right."

"She usually was."

May you like

For a moment, Claire felt close enough to walk through the clinic door.

Then the feeling vanished, leaving only the evidence she had hidden and the people still willing to kill for it.
