Chapter 6 - WHAT VANESSA WAS AFRAID OF

The photograph changed the investigation.
Until then, police could argue they were dealing with financial crimes, child abuse allegations, forged documents, and a possible connection to Claire's death.
Now they had a kidnapping victim.
Natalie Hale was alive.
And Miles Grant had shown his face beside her.
A statewide alert went out before sunset.
Miles's passport was flagged. His accounts were frozen. His office, home, and private storage facilities were searched.
Vanessa remained missing.
Adrian wanted both of them found immediately.
Instead, he had to sit in a quiet room while a child specialist gently interviewed Lily.
He watched through one-way glass.
It was the hardest hour of his life.
Lily sat at a small table with crayons.
The interviewer, Ms. Harper, never asked leading questions.
She let Lily draw.
A house.
A doghouse.
A stick figure with yellow hair.
"Who's that?" Harper asked.
"Vanessa."
"What is Vanessa doing?"
"Being mean."
"What does mean look like?"
Lily drew a black square.
"This is the laundry room. Noah cries there."
Adrian covered his mouth.
Harper asked, "Where are you when Noah is in the laundry room?"
"Sometimes stairs. Sometimes doghouse."
"How many times were you in the doghouse?"
Lily held up three fingers.
Adrian closed his eyes.
Three.
He had witnessed the fourth.
Harper waited.
"What happened the other times?"
"Vanessa asked about Mommy's shiny key."
"What did you tell her?"
"Nothing."
"Why?"
"Mommy said secret."
"Did your mommy tell you where the key was?"
Lily nodded.
"Bunny."
"Did Vanessa know that?"
"No."
Then Lily said something unexpected.
"The other lady knew."
Harper kept her tone calm.
"Which other lady?"
"Basement lady."
"Natalie?"
Lily shrugged.
Harper showed her a photo array.
Lily pointed at Natalie.
"Her."
"What did she say?"
Lily colored harder.
"She said Vanessa is scared of Mr. Miles."
Adrian looked toward Ruiz.
Ruiz wrote something down.
Harper asked, "Did Vanessa ever talk about Mr. Miles?"
Lily nodded.
"At night."
"What did she say?"
Lily looked around as though Vanessa might be behind the curtains.
"She said, 'I did what you wanted.'"
Adrian's chest tightened.
"Anything else?" Harper asked.
Lily whispered, "She said she didn't want to hurt Mommy."
Adrian stopped breathing.
Ruiz looked at him.
Harper waited several seconds.
"When did she say that?"
"Phone."
"Do you remember more?"
Lily nodded.
"She cried."
"What did Mr. Miles say?"
"I don't know."
Then Lily drew something red beside a car.
Harper asked, "What's that?"
"Mommy's car."
Adrian's heart hammered.
"How do you know?"
Lily pointed at the red scribble.
"Vanessa has the broken piece."
Harper glanced toward the glass.
"What broken piece?"
Lily put down the crayon.
"From Mommy's car. In the pretty box."
Adrian was out of the observation room before Ruiz could stop him.
He drove home with Marcus and two detectives.
Vanessa's bedroom had already been searched, but this time Adrian knew what to look for.
Pretty box.
Lily's language.
On Vanessa's dresser sat a white jewelry case trimmed in gold.
Police had opened it earlier.
Necklaces. Earrings. Watches.
Nothing obviously criminal.
Adrian removed the drawers.
The bottom panel shifted.
A hidden compartment.
Inside was a small metal object wrapped in tissue paper.
A piece of black plastic attached to a cut section of rubber hose.
Marcus stared.
"Brake line."
One detective immediately stopped them from touching it.
Crime scene technicians arrived.
The part was photographed, bagged, and rushed for analysis.
Adrian sat on the edge of the bed.
Why would Vanessa keep it?
A trophy?
Evidence?
Insurance against Miles?
They found the answer beneath the compartment.
A folded note.
Vanessa's handwriting.
If Miles ever says I caused Claire's crash, this proves he lied. Caleb cut the line. I took the piece afterward because I knew Miles would blame me someday.
A phone number was written below.
CALEB SHAW.
Marcus said, "I know that name."
"Who?"
"Contract security. Used to work private transport for Grant Legal."
Police located Caleb's last known address.
Empty.
His bank records showed a cash withdrawal that morning.
He was running too.
Then Adrian found another item in the hidden compartment.
A photograph of Vanessa and Claire.
On the back, Claire had written:
You can still choose who you become. β C
Adrian stared at it.
For the first time, Vanessa's role looked more complicated than simple greed.
Not less guilty.
She had terrorized Lily.
She had drugged Noah or allowed him to be drugged.
She had imprisoned her own sister.
Whatever fear Miles held over her did not erase those choices.
But Claire had once believed Vanessa could be saved.
That mattered.
At 9:06 PM, Adrian's private line rang.
Vanessa.
He answered without speaking.
She was crying.
"Did you find it?"
"The brake line?"
Silence.
"Yes."
"Where is Natalie?"
"Miles took her from me."
"You locked her in my basement."
"Because she wouldn't stop."
"Stop what?"
"Trying to go to police."
Adrian laughed bitterly.
"That was the right thing to do."
"You don't understand Miles."
"I understand enough."
"No, you don't."
Vanessa lowered her voice.
"He has copies of everything. Your signatures. Claire's signatures. Medical reports about your drinking after she died. Videos of you screaming. He built a file for years."
"To take my children."
"To control the trust."
"Same thing."
Vanessa cried harder.
"At first, I thought he would never hurt them."
"At first?"
"He said we only needed you declared unstable. He said Lily and Noah would stay in the house with me."
Adrian went cold.
"With you."
"I was supposed to become their guardian."
"You abused them."
"I know."
The simplicity of it shocked him.
"Then why?"
For several seconds, Vanessa could not speak.
"Because Lily wouldn't tell me where the key was. Miles kept saying if I failed, Natalie would pay. I got angry. Then I got cruel."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"You told my daughter her mother died because she cried."
"I know."
"You put Noah in a laundry room."
"I know."
"You put drops in his bottle."
Vanessa stopped.
"What?"
Adrian opened his eyes.
"Don't lie. Erin saw you."
"I didn't know what they were."
"You gave them to him."
"Miles said they were for reflux."
"You expect me to believe that?"
"No."
She was quiet.
"But Adrian, you need to believe one thing."
"What?"
"Miles doesn't want the box anymore."
"Why?"
"Because he knows Claire copied the files."
"Then what does he want?"
Vanessa whispered, "Lily."
Adrian stood.
"Why?"
"Because Claire told Miles she hid the original trust amendment somewhere only Lily could lead you to."
Adrian's pulse raced.
"Where?"
"I don't know. That's why I kept asking her about the key. I thought B-14 was it. It wasn't."
Adrian looked toward the hallway.
Lily was upstairs.
Protected.
He hoped.
Vanessa continued.
"Miles thinks Lily remembers something Claire showed her."
"She's four."
"She was two when Claire died."
"Exactly."
"Adrian, she remembered the key."
He said nothing.
Vanessa's voice dropped to a whisper.
"She remembers more than anyone realizes."
A crash sounded upstairs.
Adrian turned.
Rosa screamed.
The phone slipped from his hand.
He ran.
Lily's bedroom window was open.
Rosa stood beside the crib holding Noah.
Lily was gone.
On her pillow sat Bunny.
Pinned to its chest was a note.
NOW SHE CAN SHOW ME.
Adrian kept Vanessa on the phone while Ruiz silently signaled technicians to trace the call.
"Where are you?" Adrian asked.
"You know I can't tell you."
"Natalie might die because of you."
Vanessa made a broken sound.
"You think I don't know that?"
"Then help us find her."
"Miles moves people through empty properties tied to Northstar. Warehouses. Foreclosures. Houses no one checks."
Ruiz wrote rapidly.
Adrian said, "Give me one."
"I don't know which one."
"Then give me all of them."
Vanessa was silent.
"Why are you still protecting him?"
"I'm not protecting him. I'm trying to stay alive long enough to get Natalie back."
"You locked Natalie in my basement."
"Because she threatened to walk into a police station with Claire's evidence. Miles would have killed her before she reached the parking lot."
"So you kidnapped her first?"
"I thought I could buy time."
Adrian stared at the dark garden.
"You keep calling cruelty a plan."
Vanessa began crying again.
"I know what I became."
For the first time, Adrian believed that part.
Not because she sounded sorry.
Because she sounded disgusted.
"Turn yourself in," he said.
"Not yet."
"Vanessa."
"Miles has someone else working for him."
Adrian's pulse changed.
"Who?"
"I don't know. Someone who can get inside the house without setting off alarms."
He looked toward Marcus.
"How do you know?"
"Because Miles knew things I never told him. What Lily ate. When Noah had a fever. When you slept in the guest room after Claire's anniversary. Things from inside."
A chill moved through Adrian.
"Staff?"
"Maybe."
"Name someone."
"I can't."
Then the crash sounded upstairs, and Vanessa's warning became brutally real.
Before ending the call, Adrian asked one final question.
"Did Claire ever forgive you?"
Vanessa was silent for so long he thought the call had dropped.
"She said forgiveness wasn't permission to keep hurting people. I didn't understand that then."
Adrian looked toward the stairs where his children slept.
May you like
"You understand it now."
Vanessa whispered, "Yes."
