Chapter 7 - GRACE'S LAST SECRET

They returned to the house before dawn.
Nobody slept.
Police were quietly informed despite Richard's warning, but Adrian insisted only two detectives be involved. No patrol cars. No visible surveillance.
At 5:40 AM, Elena's attorney arrived.
Evelyn Ross was sixty-eight, sharp-eyed, and furious that Adrian had waited until Leo vanished before calling her.
"You should have contacted me the moment the trust file disappeared."
"My son was almost drowned."
"That would have been another excellent reason."
Adrian didn't argue.
Evelyn placed a leather case on the table.
Before opening it, she looked at every person in the room as if deciding who deserved to breathe near the documents. "Elena revised this trust three times after Leo was born. Each revision became more restrictive. At the time, I thought she was being cautious. Now I understand she was building walls."
Adrian frowned. "Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because your wife was my client too, and because she explicitly told me not to disclose her private instructions unless a triggering event occurred."
"Her death wasn't enough?"
Evelyn's face softened only slightly. "Her death triggered the inheritance provisions you already knew. The other instructions concerned interference, coercion, or danger to Leo. Until yesterday, I had suspicion, not proof. Lawyers who confuse suspicion with proof ruin lives."
Grace looked at the case. "What did Elena think might happen?"
Evelyn rested one hand on the brass latch. "She never gave me a full theory. She said only that if anyone tried to use Adrian's grief against him, the trust needed to survive that person."
Adrian felt the words like a physical blow. Vivian had done exactly that. She had entered the hollowed-out space after Elena's death and made herself useful before making herself necessary.
Evelyn opened the case. Inside, each document was tabbed and dated in Elena's precise handwriting. Adrian recognized it immediately. Even in legal paperwork she had drawn tiny lines beneath important phrases, as if arguing with the future.
Grace touched one tab but stopped before lifting it. "She planned all of this while she was scared."
"Yes," Evelyn said. "And she planned it while trying very hard not to scare Adrian."
Adrian looked away. "That worked out well."
No one answered.
Evelyn finally removed the first document.
"The original trust."
Vivian had told the truth.
Elena owned forty-one percent of Cole Development through shares inherited from her father.
Adrian owned forty-six.
The remaining thirteen belonged to investors and executives.
With Elena's shares placed in Leo's trust, control rested temporarily with Adrian.
Unless Adrian became unfit.
Then trusteeship transferred.
Originally to Elena's brother.
After his death-
Damon.
Grace stared at the document.
"So Richard engineered everything around that clause."
Evelyn nodded.
"He may have."
Adrian looked at Damon.
The police had permitted him to remain because Adrian had insisted he could help find Leo.
Damon looked destroyed.
"You knew."
Damon nodded.
"You knew Richard wanted the shares."
"Yes."
"And you helped him."
"At first."
Adrian laughed bitterly.
"At first?"
Damon looked at him.
"When we were twenty-three, Richard approached me."
Adrian frowned.
"Before Cole Development?"
"Before it became anything."
"Why?"
"Because he hated Elena's father."
Evelyn spoke quietly.
"They were partners."
Adrian knew part of the story.
Richard Vale and Thomas Mercer had built commercial properties together in the 1990s.
Their partnership collapsed after allegations of fraud.
Thomas emerged with most of the legitimate assets.
Richard disappeared.
Damon continued.
"Vale believed Thomas stole the company from him. When you married Elena, he saw an opportunity."
Adrian stared.
"You became my friend because of him?"
"No."
Damon answered too quickly.
Then his voice broke.
"No. God, Adrian. We were already friends."
"But he recruited you."
"Later."
"And you agreed."
Damon nodded.
"I owed money. A lot. Gambling."
Grace looked disgusted.
"How much was Elena worth?"
Damon turned toward her.
"This wasn't supposed to involve Elena."
"It always involved Elena."
"No. At first Vale only wanted financial information."
"And then?"
Damon looked at Adrian.
"Then your company became successful."
Adrian understood.
"And he wanted mine too."
Damon nodded.
The betrayal had layers.
Adrian no longer knew where the bottom was.
Evelyn opened another document.
"There's more."
Everyone turned.
"Elena amended the trust four days before her death."
Damon sat upright.
"What?"
"You didn't know?"
"No."
Evelyn looked almost satisfied.
"She removed you as successor trustee."
Adrian stared.
"Who replaced him?"
Evelyn looked toward Grace.
Grace went completely still.
Adrian followed her gaze.
"No."
Grace whispered, "Adrian."
He stood.
"You knew?"
She closed her eyes.
"Not until Elena died."
"You knew you were trustee?"
"Yes."
The room became silent.
Another secret.
Another person deciding what Adrian deserved to know.
"You lied to me."
"I never lied."
"You came into my house using an agency."
"Yes."
"You became my son's nanny."
"Yes."
"You knew you could control his trust if something happened to me."
Grace's face changed.
"I came because I was terrified something would happen to him."
"You could have told me."
"Elena asked me not to unless it became necessary."
"My wife is dead!"
Grace flinched.
"She was trying to protect you."
"Everyone keeps protecting me with lies."
He walked away.
Grace followed.
"Adrian."
"No."
"I didn't want the trust."
"But you took the job."
"Yes!"
Her voice finally rose.
"Because I loved Elena too!"
Adrian stopped.
Grace's tears came fast now.
"You lost your wife. Leo lost his mother. But I lost the closest thing I had to a sister."
Adrian said nothing.
"She called me when she was scared because she knew I would come if Leo needed me."
Grace wiped her face.
"I waited two years because I hoped she had been wrong."
"Then why come?"
"Because Vivian appeared."
Adrian stared.
Grace continued.
"I recognized her name from Elena's notes."
"You knew from the beginning?"
"I suspected."
"And said nothing."
"I needed proof."
"Sounds familiar."
Grace closed her eyes.
The comparison hurt.
Elena had done the same thing.
Maybe that was what frightened Adrian.
Grace resembled Elena in the ways that could destroy him.
Stubborn loyalty.
Secret plans.
A willingness to carry danger alone.
"I should have told you sooner," Grace said.
"Yes."
"I was afraid you'd fire me."
"I might have."
"I know."
"And then what?"
"I would have watched Leo from somewhere else."
The answer was so simple that Adrian believed her.
Before he could respond, Marcus entered.
"We found something."
He placed a tablet on the table.
Traffic cameras had captured the vehicle used to take Leo.
A gray van.
One camera caught the driver's face.
Rosa gasped.
Adrian didn't recognize him.
Damon did.
"Caleb Shaw."
"Who is that?"
"Vale's driver."
"Where does he live?"
"Richard doesn't use homes under his own name."
"Think."
Damon hesitated.
Then said, "There's an estate north of the city."
Marcus was already moving.
"Address?"
"Old horse farm near Brighton."
Adrian grabbed his jacket.
Evelyn stopped him.
"Richard expects you tomorrow."
"Exactly."
Grace understood.
"He won't expect us today."
Vivian spoke from the doorway.
Everyone turned.
She had been under guard in the guest room.
"How did you get out?"
"The guard has a bathroom."
Marcus looked annoyed.
Vivian ignored him.
"You can't go to Brighton."
Adrian glared.
"Why?"
"Because that's where Richard wants you to look."
Damon stared.
"How do you know?"
"Because he told me about that estate every time he wanted someone frightened."
"Then where?"
Vivian looked at Adrian.
"You have a lake house."
Adrian's stomach dropped.
"No."
"Yes."
"Elena's lake house?"
Vivian nodded.
"He knew about it before I ever met you."
Grace whispered, "It belonged to Elena's family."
"And before that," Vivian said, "part of the land belonged to Richard."
Damon stood.
"She's right."
Adrian was already moving.
The lake house sat ninety minutes away.
They reached it in sixty-three.
Marcus drove.
Police followed at distance.
Adrian, Grace, and Damon rode together.
Vivian remained with detectives.
The house looked deserted.
No vehicles.
No lights.
Adrian entered through the back.
"Leo?"
Nothing.
They searched the kitchen.
Living room.
Bedrooms.
Empty.
Grace entered Leo's old nursery.
His crib was still there from summers before Elena died.
A stuffed bear sat on the pillow.
Grace picked it up.
Warm.
"Someone was here."
Adrian's heart hammered.
Then they heard it.
A tiny sound.
Under the floor.
"Daddy!"
Adrian dropped to his knees.
"Leo!"
Marcus found the basement door hidden beneath the pantry staircase.
Locked.
Adrian kicked it open.
He ran down.
Leo sat on a mattress beneath a blanket.
Alone.
Alive.
Adrian lifted him.
Leo screamed with relief.
Grace reached them and wrapped both arms around them.
For several seconds, nobody cared about anything else.
Then Leo pointed behind Adrian.
"Man."
Adrian turned.
The basement was empty.
"What man?"
Leo pointed toward another door.
Marcus opened it.
A tunnel led toward the old boathouse.
They ran.
By the time they reached the water, an engine roared in the distance.
A boat disappeared across the lake.
Richard had escaped.
Damon cursed.
Adrian didn't care.
Leo was in his arms.
That was enough.
Then Grace noticed something taped to the boathouse wall.
A photograph.
Elena.
Taken the day before she died.
Behind her, partially hidden in a parked car, sat a man.
Damon.
And beside Damon-
Vivian.
Grace stared.
"Vivian said she didn't know Elena was going to die."
Adrian studied the photograph.
The date.
The location.
Then he turned toward Damon.
"You said you met Vivian eleven months ago."
Damon looked at the image.
His face collapsed.
Grace whispered, "You both lied."
Leo buried his face in Adrian's neck.
Adrian held his son tighter.
May you like
The truth was finally becoming visible.
And it was uglier than anything the camera by the pool had ever recorded.
