Chapter 8 - THE DAY ELENA DIED

Vivian stopped denying it when Adrian placed the photograph in front of her.
She stared for nearly a minute.
Then she sat down.
"That was outside Elena's office."
Adrian's voice was flat.
"I know."
Grace stood beside him.
Damon remained with detectives downstairs.
Leo slept upstairs with Rosa.
"Why were you there?"
Vivian rubbed her hands together.
"I worked for Richard."
"That part we know."
"No. You know what Damon told you."
Adrian leaned forward.
"Then tell me the rest."
Vivian looked toward Grace.
"I wasn't supposed to meet you."
Adrian frowned.
"What?"
"Richard never planned for me to become your fiancee."
"Then why did you?"
Her mouth twisted.
"Because you liked me."
Grace looked away.
Adrian felt embarrassed, even now.
Vivian continued.
"I was supposed to attend foundation events. Get close enough to learn schedules. Contacts. Security procedures."
"You were spying."
"Yes."
"For Richard."
"Yes."
"And Damon."
"At first."
Adrian almost laughed.
Everybody seemed to qualify betrayal with those two words.
At first.
Vivian wiped her eyes.
For several seconds she studied her own hands, as though the story were written somewhere between the lines of her palms. "You want me to be one thing, Adrian. A liar. A gold digger. A woman who walked into your house already knowing how much damage she wanted to do. It would probably be easier if I were."
"Don't ask me to feel sorry for you."
"I'm not." Her eyes lifted. "I'm asking you to understand how people like Richard work. He doesn't recruit monsters. He recruits people with one weak place and keeps pressing until it becomes a door."
Grace's voice was cold. "What was yours?"
Vivian's answer came quickly. "Damon."
The word surprised even her.
She looked toward the window. "I met him when I was twenty-seven. I was working events for a hotel group Richard partly controlled. Damon was charming, generous, miserable in ways he hid from everyone else. He told me Adrian was the brother he chose and the person he could never disappoint. I thought that meant he was loyal. I didn't understand it meant he was terrified of losing what Adrian thought of him."
Adrian's jaw tightened. "And somehow that became my problem."
"Eventually it became everyone's."
Vivian swallowed. "Damon and I were together before I met you."
"We know."
"No."
She looked at him.
"We were really together."
That surprised Adrian.
"He told me you were an affair."
Vivian laughed bitterly.
"Of course he did."
Grace studied her.
"You loved him."
Vivian didn't answer.
That was answer enough.
"Richard promised Damon control of Cole Development once you were declared unfit or removed," Vivian said. "Damon promised me we'd leave after."
Adrian stared toward the hall.
"My best friend planned to steal my company."
"Yes."
"And marry you?"
"Yes."
Grace frowned.
"So why did Vivian become engaged to Adrian?"
Vivian's expression hardened.
"Because Damon changed."
"How?"
"He got greedy."
She looked at Adrian.
"After Elena died, you leaned on him for everything. Suddenly he had power without needing Richard."
"And you?"
"I was useful."
The words sounded like poison in her mouth.
"Damon told me to stay close to you. Richard agreed."
"So you dated me."
"Yes."
"You played with my son."
Vivian's eyes filled.
"That part wasn't fake."
Adrian felt rage.
"Don't say that."
"I care about Leo."
"You put him beside a pool."
"I know."
"You let him fall."
"I know!"
She started crying.
"I wanted Grace gone. That's all."
Grace looked stunned by the phrase.
That's all.
Vivian continued.
"I thought Leo would reach for the toy, get scared, and cry. I planned to pull him back. Then I saw Grace coming."
"So you stepped away."
"I panicked."
"You saw an opportunity."
Vivian closed her eyes.
"Yes."
Adrian stood.
He needed distance.
Grace asked the question he couldn't.
"What happened to Elena?"
Vivian's crying stopped.
She stared at the table.
"Richard wanted her laptop."
"We know."
"She had evidence linking him to shell companies."
"We know."
"He ordered Damon to get it."
"And?"
"Damon couldn't."
Adrian turned.
Vivian continued.
"Elena stopped trusting him."
"So Richard ordered you."
"Yes."
"What did you do?"
"I followed her."
Adrian's hands became fists.
"The day before the accident?"
"Yes."
"What happened?"
"I broke into her office after she left."
"The photograph shows you with Damon."
"He met me there."
"Why?"
"Because I found a copy of the trust amendment."
Grace inhaled.
Vivian looked at her.
"Your name was on it."
Grace's face went pale.
"That's when Damon learned Elena had removed him."
"Yes."
Adrian understood.
"That destroyed Richard's plan."
Vivian nodded.
"If I remained a fit guardian, I controlled the trust. If something happened to me, Grace controlled it."
"Yes."
"So Damon gained nothing."
"Yes."
Adrian's voice became colder.
"What did Richard do?"
Vivian began shaking.
"He told Damon Elena had to change the trust back."
Grace whispered, "She never would."
"No."
"Then?"
Vivian stared at Adrian.
"Richard threatened her."
"How?"
"Phone calls. Messages."
"We saw some evidence."
"She refused."
"And then?"
Vivian said nothing.
Adrian stepped closer.
"Tell me."
"Damon gave Richard her schedule."
Adrian closed his eyes.
"He knew she was driving to the lake house?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Richard said he wanted to stop her."
"How?"
"I don't know."
"Liar."
"I swear."
"What did Damon know?"
Vivian looked toward the door.
"He knew Richard hired Caleb."
"The driver who took Leo."
"Yes."
"To do what?"
"Tamper with Elena's car."
Grace covered her mouth.
Adrian almost couldn't hear his own voice.
"The brakes."
Vivian nodded.
"They weren't supposed to fail completely."
Adrian laughed.
The sound frightened everyone.
"What does that even mean?"
"Richard wanted her frightened. He wanted a minor accident."
"By cutting her brakes?"
"I'm telling you what Damon told me."
"And you believed him?"
"I wanted to."
That answer sounded more truthful than anything else she had said.
Adrian walked to the window.
For three years he had imagined Elena's final moments.
Now he saw them differently.
Her foot pressing the brake.
Nothing happening.
The curve ahead.
Fear.
Leo waiting at home.
Adrian waiting at home.
Had she known?
Had she understood?
Grace stood beside him.
"You don't have to hear the rest tonight."
"Yes, I do."
He turned.
"All of it."
Vivian nodded.
"After the crash, Damon wanted to go to police."
Adrian stared.
"What?"
"He was terrified."
"So why didn't he?"
"Richard showed him the financial records."
"What records?"
"All the money Damon had stolen over the years."
Damon had not merely helped Richard.
He had embezzled millions.
Richard owned him.
"He threatened prison," Vivian said. "Then he threatened you."
"Me?"
"He said if Damon confessed, evidence would make it look like you ordered Elena's death for her shares."
Grace whispered, "Could he do that?"
Vivian looked at her.
"He had forged emails. Payments. Insurance documents."
The fake beneficiary change.
Adrian understood.
Richard had built a trap for everyone.
Damon chose silence.
Vivian chose silence.
And Elena was buried beneath it.
Adrian walked downstairs.
Damon sat in the library with a detective.
"Leave us."
The detective hesitated.
"Door stays open."
Adrian nodded.
When they were alone, Damon looked at him.
"She told you."
"Yes."
Damon lowered his head.
"I'm sorry."
Adrian sat across from him.
"No. You don't get to say that yet."
Damon's eyes filled.
"Ask me anything."
"Did you know Richard touched Elena's brakes?"
A long pause.
"Yes."
Grace stood in the doorway.
Damon looked at her.
"Not until that afternoon."
"You could have called her," Adrian said.
"I did."
"What?"
"I called Elena."
Adrian stared.
"She didn't answer."
"Again."
"I called five times."
"Why didn't you call police?"
"I was scared."
Adrian leaned forward.
"My wife died because you were scared."
Damon began crying.
Adrian felt no satisfaction.
"Did you go to the crash?"
"Yes."
Adrian remembered.
Damon had arrived at the hospital before anyone else.
"How?"
Damon's silence answered.
"You knew where it happened."
"Yes."
"Because Richard told you."
"Yes."
Adrian stood.
Damon whispered, "I saw her car before the ambulance arrived."
Grace's face changed.
"What?"
Damon continued.
"She was alive."
Adrian froze.
"What did you say?"
"When I got there, she was still conscious."
The room disappeared.
"You spoke to her?"
Damon nodded.
Adrian's voice cracked.
"What did she say?"
Damon cried harder.
"She said Leo's name."
Adrian grabbed the chair.
"And?"
"She told me to tell you she was sorry."
Grace covered her mouth.
"And then?"
Damon looked directly at Adrian.
"She gave me something."
"What?"
Damon swallowed.
"A key."
Adrian went still.
"To what?"
"I didn't know then."
"Where is it?"
"I gave it to Richard."
Adrian nearly lunged at him.
Grace stepped between them.
"Wait."
She looked at Damon.
"What did the key look like?"
"Small. Silver. Number engraved on it."
"What number?"
Damon thought.
"317."
Grace slowly turned toward Adrian.
"That sounds like a safe-deposit box."
Evelyn Ross confirmed it an hour later.
Elena maintained a private box at First Federal Bank.
Box 317.
No one had accessed it since the day she died.
Except there was one problem.
The bank's electronic records showed someone had tried to enter the vault that morning.
Using Elena's credentials.
The attempt had failed.
Security captured a face.
Marcus opened the image.
Nobody spoke.
Richard Vale stood at the counter.
Older now.
Gray-haired.
But unmistakable.
He was alive.
And for the first time in fifteen years, there was a clear photograph proving it.
Adrian looked at the timestamp.
9:12 AM.
Richard wasn't running.
He wasn't hiding.
May you like
He was searching for whatever Elena had protected until her last breath.
And now Adrian knew exactly where to find it first.
