The Boy on the Balcony

Chapter 13 - The Boy on the Balcony
Malcolm Pierce confessed that Margaret Blackwood was his biological mother.
She hid the relationship because Malcolm’s father was a married conductor whose scandal would have destroyed several families. Malcolm grew up with foster parents and worked backstage to remain near her.
On the night Margaret died, she asked him to carry the founder’s diary to Andrew Mercer.
Before he reached the warehouse, a car forced his bicycle off the road. Men took the diary and warned him that Margaret would die if he spoke.
He returned to Blackwood.
Margaret was already on the balcony with Vivian.
Malcolm heard them arguing.
He saw Margaret fall.
He did not see whether she jumped, slipped, or was pushed.
Vivian found him behind the curtain and promised to pay for his education if he said he had gone home early.
Malcolm accepted.
Thirty-two years later, Vivian supported his appointment as president because she believed he remained controllable.
“Why help us now?” Ruth asked.
“Because I watched her do to Sophie what she did to you and realized I had spent my whole life protecting the moment I was most ashamed of.”
The missing diary was not in Malcolm’s office because Vivian’s attorney had taken it during the search.
Malcolm had hidden a copy.
Margaret’s final entry described the warehouse plan. She intended to meet Andrew, secure the concerto evidence, and call federal investigators. Vivian learned of the meeting and brought Clara to force Margaret’s cooperation.
The diary also revealed that Thomas Sterling wanted to confess and return the score to Ruth.
Vivian feared losing everything built around his stolen reputation.
Margaret wrote:
Vivian does not love music. She loves rooms where music makes people silent enough to obey her.
The court admitted the copied diary provisionally.
Vivian’s control weakened further.
Then Andrew disappeared from his assisted-living residence.
His room showed no sign of struggle. A note on the bed read:
RUTH, I REMEMBER WHERE THOMAS PUT THE ORIGINAL CONTRACT. DO NOT FOLLOW.
Ruth knew the note was genuine because Andrew used their private interval symbols beneath his name.
He had left voluntarily.
But someone had given him a reason to go alone.
The location encoded in the symbols pointed to the abandoned warehouse.
The city planned to demolish it at sunrise.
Ruth, Daniel, and Lena arrived before midnight.

A light moved inside the ruined building.
Then the doors locked behind them.
