The Warehouse Reopens

Chapter 14 - The Warehouse Reopens

The warehouse smelled of rust, rain, and old smoke.

Andrew stood near the burned office wall holding a flashlight. Vivian faced him across the room.

She had removed her pearls and ivory jacket. Without the uniform of authority, she looked exhausted rather than powerful.

A metal document box rested between them.

Ruth called Andrew’s name.

He turned.

“I told you not to follow.”

“You spent thirty-two years missing. You no longer get to disappear politely.”

Daniel almost laughed despite the danger.

Vivian held a small remote.

Red lights blinked along the support columns.

Demolition charges had been placed for the morning contractor. Vivian had acquired the activation code.

“The building is condemned,” she said. “If it falls tonight, everyone will blame negligence.”

Lena raised her phone.

“This conversation is streaming to police.”

Vivian pressed a button.

The screen went dark.

A signal jammer activated.

She looked at Andrew.

“Give me the contract.”

Andrew opened the metal box.

Inside was the original Lantern Music Works partnership agreement. Andrew and Margaret Blackwood jointly owned the experimental piano designs, including the centennial grand. Ruth held succession rights.

The agreement also contained Thomas Sterling’s signed transfer of the concerto copyright to Ruth, dated the night of the fire.

Vivian had spent three decades monetizing music she knew no longer belonged to the Sterling estate.

Andrew slid the document toward Ruth instead.

Vivian pressed the remote.

Nothing happened.

Daniel held up the black battery pack he had removed from a wire near the door.

“Conductors notice cables,” he said.

Police sirens approached outside. Lena’s phone had transmitted several seconds before the jammer took effect—enough to reveal their location.

Vivian ran toward the rear stairwell.

The weakened floor collapsed beneath her.

She caught the edge with both hands.

Ruth reached her first.

For one second, the woman who erased her life hung above the same burned floor where Thomas died.

Vivian looked up.

“You should let go.”

Ruth gripped her wrist.

“No. You do not get to turn me into you.”

Daniel and Andrew helped pull Vivian to safety.

Police entered and arrested her.

As officers led her away, Vivian looked at the preserved contract in Ruth’s hands.

“People will always remember his name before yours.”

Ruth looked toward the piano-shaped shadow burned into the far wall.

“Then we will teach them the whole sentence.”
