What Vivian Did After the Fire

Chapter 08 - What Vivian Did After the Fire
Andrew remembered fragments.
The solvent.
Clara screaming.
Thomas falling beneath a burning beam.
The rear window.
A white medical van.
Then waking in a clinic where staff called him Adam and insisted his memories were hallucinations caused by trauma.
Vivian visited once.
She told him Ruth and baby Daniel died in the warehouse.
She placed newspaper clippings beside his bed. The clippings had been fabricated.
Andrew tried to leave. The clinic declared him dangerous and medicated him.
After three years, a nurse helped him escape. He had no identification, damaged memory, and hands too injured for professional violin work.
He adopted the name printed on the nurse’s spare transit card: Adam Bell.
He searched for Ruth once in 2001. A Sterling Foundation attorney found him first and threatened the church that employed him.
Andrew stopped searching because he believed Ruth had built a new life.
Ruth held his hand.
“You believed the same lie I did.”
Daniel stood near the window, watching parents who had both sacrificed him without asking what he needed.
He was glad Andrew lived.
He was furious at the years lost.
Lena recorded Andrew’s statement and collected medical files.
Vivian’s attorneys attacked immediately. They called him an impaired man manipulated by Ruth. They claimed Jane Bell and Adam Bell coordinated false stories for financial gain.
Blackwood’s board scheduled an emergency vote.
The agenda included removing Malcolm Pierce, firing Lena Ortiz, and declaring all recovered materials property of the Sterling Foundation.
Vivian still controlled nine of fifteen board votes.
Ruth decided to attend.
Andrew insisted on coming.
The meeting took place in the same concert hall where Vivian humiliated Ruth. This time, employees and students filled the balconies.
Vivian sat at the board table beneath Thomas Sterling’s portrait.
She looked at Andrew.
For the first time, her composure failed completely.
“You died,” she whispered.
Andrew’s damaged hands rested on the table.
“No. You kept changing my name.”
Lena presented the transfer records, Jane’s testimony, the hidden recordings, and the altered dental file.
Vivian denied everything.
Then Andrew mentioned the blue music box.
Vivian’s eyes moved toward Jane.
Andrew said, “Thomas hid his confession beneath the cylinder.”
Jane opened the music box.
The decorative brass cylinder lifted away, revealing a tiny cassette.
Vivian stood.
“No one has authenticated that.”
The hall speakers activated.
Thomas Sterling’s voice filled the room.
“Vivian started the fire. The concerto belongs to Ruth Mercer. If I do not survive, do not let my wife turn my cowardice into history.”

The board members stopped looking at Ruth.
They began looking at Vivian.
