The Fire Mabel Survived

Chapter 10 - The Fire Mabel Survived
The old storage-room fire returned to the investigation.
Mabel had been inside when smoke began.
She suffered burns on one hand while saving payroll records and an employee trapped behind stacked boxes. Walter remembered a stranger near the back alley but police found no witness willing to identify him.
New records connected the electrical contractor to Sterling.
The contractor, now living in Nevada, agreed to testify. Raymond paid him to create a small fire intended to pressure Walter into selling. He claimed he never knew Mabel would enter the room.
Intent did not remove consequence.
Mabel survived, but the burns caused years of pain. She never told Lucas because she feared he would confront Raymond and lose his future.
Once again, protection became silence.
Walter listened to the contractor’s confession in the empty diner after closing.
“I should have known,” he said.
Mack sat across from him.
“You knew somebody wanted the land.”
“I let Mabel tell me it was over.”
“She wanted you to keep living.”
Walter looked at his scarred hands.
The fire had shaped everything afterward. Mabel wrote the trust because of it. She chose Mack as trustee. She documented Raymond’s letters. Her fear became structure instead of surrender.
Lucas arrived late.
He had learned Raymond used the fire to recruit him years later. Raymond once said, “Your father’s carelessness nearly killed your mother.”
Lucas believed Walter’s stubborn attachment to the diner caused the accident.
The truth reversed the wound.
Raymond caused the fire, then used it to turn son against father.
Lucas asked Walter why he never explained.
Walter answered, “Your mother asked me not to.”
“Why?”
“Because we thought silence would protect you.”
Lucas looked toward Mabel’s photograph above the register.
“It protected him.”
